TVS-473 questions
Hi,
I was interested in the TVS-473 but had a few questions
1) Is WD 8 tb (WD Red Pro 8TB 3.5-Inch SATAIII 7200rpm 128MB Cache NAS Internal Hard Drive (WD8001FFWX) supported? I went through the list but didn't seem to see 8tb for red. Also if I start off my nas with 2x 8tb in raid0 , will I also be able to add other drives ie 2x8tb in raid0 + 2tb drive + 4 tb drive, or how does that work? does it all have to be in raid 0? If I start off my raid with 2x 8tb in raid 0 is the only option adding 2 more 8tb in raid 0?
2) I see the following details for RAM: TVS-473-8G: 8GB DDR4 (2 x 4GB) (For dual- or quad-DIMM configurations, you must use a pair of identical DDR4 modules.)
Since the 473 already comes with 2x4gb, can I upgrade by putting 2x8gb or 2x16gb in addition? or does it all have to be the same and I have to remove the original 2x4gb and expand it will all of the same type of ram?
3) From the software side is there a way to partition or separate the storage space? ie if my kids want to use the server as well but I dont want my information to mix with theirs, something like separate logins for different partitions of the server?
Thank you

Re: TVS-473 questions
Hey Philippe,
Thanks for the replies
1) OK yes I will have to ask QNAP then
2) Yes Raid0 is a horrible idea, I actually meant to write Raid1 haha. Raid 5 seems like best idea as you suggest.
If I start with 3 disks and get the space of 2 disks.... but I add one disk later, does it work seamlessly or do I have to backup the data and start from 0 again?
3) Ok , so basically I can set specific folders and then assign user logins to access certain folders correct? I assume this is easy to do within the interface? (I don't know how to use Linux)
Thank you

Re: TVS-473 questions
Q2 - Yes, you can expand your raid-5 from 3 to 4 drives later w/o having to backup/restore. Just use storage pool, thick volume and you will be fine.mambino wrote: 2) Yes Raid0 is a horrible idea, I actually meant to write Raid1 haha. Raid 5 seems like best idea as you suggest.

Q3 - Yes it is all managed via a gui.

I tried this by adding 2 X 16, and it wouldn't boot ...... when i removed the original 2 X 4 ..... everything was fine

Re: TVS-473 questions
Wow, does anyone know why this is? I was actually planning to do exactly that - Add 2x 16gb aftermarket ram to the existing 2x4gbkherr4377 wrote:2) I see the following details for RAM: TVS-473-8G: 8GB DDR4 (2 x 4GB) (For dual- or quad-DIMM configurations, you must use a pair of identical DDR4 modules.)

Re: TVS-473 questions
My guess would be due to having 2x4 1st. Generally if there are different capacity memories, the larger ones need to be the first pair.mambino wrote: Wow, does anyone know why this is? I was actually planning to do exactly that - Add 2x 16gb aftermarket ram to the existing 2x4gb
My other thought would be slightly different memory timings/config between the 2x4's and 2x16's.

Re: TVS-473 questions
Yes Philippe is quite correct. Memory Banks are usually used like so
Memory slots: 0+2 and 1+3 or 1+3 and 2+4 - depending on the slot markings.

Re: TVS-473 questions
Good call out guys, I guess I assumed the memory bank alignment was a given which I should not have.

Re: TVS-473 questions
so in simple words, if I am buying a TVS 473 with 8gb preloaded, do I have to move around the memory sticks that are already in there if I want to add 2x 16gb? or which slots should I place my 2 new ram sticks in?

Re: TVS-473 questions
Assuming you buy compatible memory, you should just be able to add the extra DIMMS in the open memory slots.

Re: TVS-473 questions
Does anyone know if the 16 GB version uses 2 x 8 GB SODIMMs or does it use 4 x 4 GB? I really hope they leave a bank of slots open for expansion rather than populate it the cheapest way possible. Being that a 32 GB kit costs about $300, as much as I would like to just max the thing out now, my budget constraints indicate I should probably just get the 16 GB configuration now and then buy a 32 GB kit in a couple of months after I can demonstrate this NAS can do all the things I think it can do. If it does all the wondrous things I hope it can do, I will be able to cut loose a lot of cloud and subscription services I will no longer need!
