Thinking about buying a TS251 largely for media centre opportunities, but I don't see a real need to get rid of my six bay TS-659 Pro II for the bulk of my storage andbackup solutions.
My thinking is to by the TS251 two bay or HS 251and store much of my media on the older 659. I am pretty sure Plex running on the newer NAS could point to paths on the network, but what about HD station and other native apps? Can I set up shares that sit on another network path? How will performance be?
Cheers,
Kev.

Plex server will have whatever support Plex offers in terms of remote share connection (that isn't QNAP specific, more driven by what Plex supports).
You can also create connections in File Station to your existing NAS.
However, VideoStation/Music/etc. only will be able to see media local to QNAP itself, they won't have visibility to your 659 data. HD Station is just a "shell" for other apps. So things like Kodi could see you other NAS data via NFS/SMB/etc.
As for setting up share's on another path (ie. QNAP), I don't believe that is supported natively, but that doesn't mean you might not be able to "hack" something to work.
