QUESTION ABOUT 1277 AND 10GBE CARD and VM question.

Post by bapw@comcast.net »

I am still thinking about which model to get. My question is with new cards for Qm2 that would go in the 3x4 slot and the video card that would go in the 3x8 slot, which model card can you use to add 10gbe. I read that the new 10 gbe card needs the 3x4 slot so that is a no go. Also how much difference is there in VMs between 1700 and 1600.

You should be able to use that 10GbE card in the PCIE 2.x x4 slot as PCIe 2.0 x 4 is rated for 2GB/s which is over the transfer rates of a 10Gb card.

As for 1600 vs. 1700, total passmark difference is about +10-13% difference. Depends on the use case as 1600 has fewer but faster cores vs. 1700 has more cores/threads but they are slower.

So based on the above does anyone have a 10Gb network card populating Slot 2: PCIe Gen3 (x4) or Slot 3: PCIe Gen2 (x4)?

I have done a lot of research and chatted with customer service (who talked to sales as well) and we were unable to come up with a definitive answer. I would prefer dual SFP+, but 10GBASE-T would be fine as well. Even a single port card would work, but the dual port would be nice for future use.

I think my options are:
QXG-10G1T
LAN-10G1TA
LAN-10G2T-X550
LAN-10G2SF-MLX

My Setup would be as follows if possilbe:
Slot 1: PCIe Gen3 (x8) = GPU
Slot 2: PCIe Gen3 (x4) = 10GB Network
Slot 3: PCIE Gen2 (x4) = QM2-2S-220A

I have the QXG card in either slot 2 or 3 (can’t remember which) on my 877 and works just fine.

I went with the 1677 and love it. It had the 10gbe built in so did not have to give up either video card or m2 card and still have the extra slot. I have the video card in slot 1 and the m2 card in slot 2. Slot 3 is still empty. I have 8 8tb drives in and space for 4 more which should be filled soon.
