Recommendations for new Qnap NAS

Post by businkin »

Hi,

I need to upgrade my existing TS219P2 NAS to a 4 bay NAS as I have reached capacity. I have browsed the website and need guidance on the right one.

It is for both home office and home entertainment/digital storage use.

This is what I want to use it for:

1. Storage of MS office type documents and multimedia files.
2. Serve as a multi-media centre to stream mutlimedia wirelessly to TVs and mobile devices.
3. Serve as a music centre to stream music wirelessly to any device.
4. Surveillance - low volume
5. Must be able to stream via an existing home network.
6. Private cloud
7. Synchronisation with a public cloud (eg. OneDrive, iCloud)

Thanks

Brad

TS-453B is a popular model and doesn't break the bank.

or the very similar but cut down version (aka cheaper), the TS-453Be.

if you want a oled model, yeah the TS-453B is nice (with added cost for the premium quality features e.g. oled screen and quickaccess)

https://nascompares.com/qnap-ts-253b-vs ... 453be-nas/

if transcoding is a required feature, then refer to this list for expected transcoding performance using plex
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... =314388488

something like a ts-453be can perform adequately up to 1080p low and possibly medium bit rate videos, although i'm doubtful about high bit rate performance @ 1080p based on the googlesheet limited mentioned (is without issue for 1080 if using quicksync feature but which requires a plex pass subscription keep in mind).

anyway this model is my recommendation for an average capable all rounder NAS at a reasonable price.

But if you require more cpu threads or a higher passmark for more intensive applications, there are the Intel I7's and the AMD Ryzen models (will cost more, but the performance and features are there if thats what you need). More options are 10gbe... thunderbolt3.... you can check the model page for what has those features :)

anyway with a 4bay you can do raid5. You can calculate your ACTUAL usable space for raid5 using this nifty tool, to decide if 4bay or what tb size hdds you will require.
https://www.servethehome.com/raid-calculator/

If the old NAS 2bay is insufficient for acting as a backup, there is also the new TR-004 which is a 4bay usb that can act as your backup :)

for private cloud there are options. use keyword "cloud"

https://qnapclub.eu/en/search

Nextcloud

cloudTorrent

QOwncloud

pcloud

If qpkgs are insufficient, there is also container station, then you can install apps from docker (more complicated than QPKGs to setup)
https://hub.docker.com/search?q=&type=image

or you can use virtual station to host windows, linux and run whatever app you need

there is lots of stuff you can do with your NAS, but keep in mind the cpu passmark score and plan for what will be sufficient for what you are planning to use the NAS for.

you're welcome :)

also robbie made a buyers guide here. The important bit i would direct your attention to is the part "Best CPU for your NAS"
https://nascompares.com/2018/10/19/nas- ... d-netgear/

the arm and annapura models are sufficient for a file server type of NAS, but anything requiring cpu performance will not be so nice on these types of lower end models. so when you decide on a model make sure the cpu will be sufficient for what you intend to use for :}

here is also a review of the more recent features in the latest QTS, if you want to compare to your older QNAP on an older QTS (latest is 4.3.6 with a planned 4.4.x coming sometime possibly this year for most of the current models)
https://nascompares.com/2018/09/10/qnap ... ta-review/

as for hdd recommendation, WD Reds seem good value raid hdds, and easier to claim warranty if there is issues. Also people say it's quieter vs seagate and hgst deskstar nas.

on the other hand, seagate ironwolf has a supposedly more accurate smart test reading they market as ironwolf health management.

best time to buy hdds usually black fridays year end :) you can get some nice deals then. if you can wait that long :(
