What to Buy to Extend TS-451+ NAS Disk Capacity

Post by wewhe0 »

Where I'm at now:
TS-451+ with 8GB Ram and 4x 8TB WD Red drives, configured as Raid 5 with single storage pool and single volume.

Problem is I'm fast running out of storage capacity (at 80% full now) and I have a need for at least another 10TB of disk space.
The NAS is only used to store and stream multimedia files using the QTS 'VideoStation5' and 'Cinema28' Aps.

Where I need to get to:
I need to increase storage capacity. Before QNAP discontinued the UX-500P, that expansion enclosure might have been the best
option as I think it could have been configured as an extension of the existing storage pool on the TS-451+.

Now the TR-004 is the only(?) expansion enclosure available. Assuming I populate it with 4x drives in a Raid 5 configuration,
to attach the expansion enclosure to the TS-451+, it will need to be configured as a new storage pool(s) additional to the one existing
on the TS-451+, correct?

Now here is where I really the need advice:
Will 'VideoStation5' and 'Cinerma28' be able to (or be configured in such a way as to be able to) see and catalogue the new multimedia
files added to the storage pool on the TR-004?

This is the rub, if those QTS Aps can't see, catalogue and play new multimedia files added to the TR-004, then the extension enclosure
won't be of any help and won't do what I need.

If the above issues with the QTS Aps and the TR-004 prove to be correct, then what alternatives do I have to increase the storage
capacity?

Is the only option a bigger NAS with more drive bays? Not my option of chose really.

Hope that all makes sense.

Thanks in advance for everyone's help ...............

as both are qnap apps, I am pretty sure they can read files from another pool/volume

If you have the money to spare, I'd go for a nas with more disk bays

keep the old one for backups (you need backups too)

if i'm not mistaken, the tr-004 can only create a volume on itself, then you can access storage from there to your existing nas.

the old usb and thunderbolt could be added to pools

no as said before..expansion enclosures cannot expand main unit arrays or pools

no qnap expansion enclosure could add drives to an array

Thanks for the reply.
Back-up of the data/files is not an issue as that is already happening independent of the NAS using remote drives.
As is the case in most places, money IS any issue and can't really afford to just get a new and bigger NAS unless I really have to. Want to spend what little money there is on new WD Reds ............

That's my understanding too, hence why the old UX-500P might have been better.

It's the fact that any new file additions will be in a new and separate storage pool that has me concerned that the QTS Aps might not see and be able to integrate these files with those on the TR-451+ 'Multimedia' folder.
