Which 2-bay?

Post by draconus »

Hello,
Looking for 2-bay NAS to replace Apple Time Machine.

I already have a TS-451 model which I am very happy with, so want to stick with QNAP.

I want a newer model so that it will support current version of QTS and future QTS updates for at least 4-5 years.

Any recommendation as to what 2-bay unit will suit ?

Thanks
Mal

Hi there. here are the "available at time of posting" 2 BAY nases you have on offer:

https://www.qnap.com/en/product/?conditions=0-2

but I guess these 3 would be the strongest contenders.

https://www.qnap.com/en/product/compare ... t_overview

I could not however guarantee 4-5 years worth of QTS updates. more like 3-4years as an average. Security updates maybe slightly longer.

the TS-253B is approx 2 years old already. not sure if any new products are coming out as yet.
Regards Simon

Thanks Simon,
Yeah 4-5 years is probably a little optimistic, 3-4 isn’t too bad. Its just for time machine so the latest OS is probably not that critical, as long as it keeps going i guess.

your TS451 supports the latest 4.4.1 beta ..so you can't get anything newer than this (OS wise)

Hi Mal,
TS-251B is the latest 2-bay model. You can check the press release dates of all products here https://www.qnap.com/en/news/2019
or consider the 3-bay TS-351 (same CPU as your TS-451) if you do not need the extra PCIE slot nor the 4K video support.

Personally 2 bays are a waste of money.
Do a calculation a 2bay vs 4 bay cost and putting half the size drives in the 4 bay.

I think not a lot of difference. but with the 4bay u have double the potential.
Qnap TS-1277 1700 (48gb RAM) 8x10TB WD White,- Raid5, 2x M.2 Crucial 1TB (Raid 1 VM),
2x SSD 860 EVO 500gb (Raid1 QTS), 2x SSD 860 EVO 250GB (Cache), 2x M.2 PCIe 970 500gb NVME (Raid1 Plex and Emby server)
GTX 1050 TI
Qnap TVS-1282 i7 (32GB RAM) 6x8TB WD White - JBOD, 2x M.2 Crucial 500gb (Raid1 VM),
2x SSD EVO 500gb (Raid1 QTS), 2x SSD EVO 250gb (Raid1 Cache), 2x M.2 PCIe Intel 512GB NVME (Raid1-Servers)
Synology -1817+ - DOA
Drobo 5n - 5x4TB Seagate, - Drobo Raid = 15TB
ProBox 8 Bay USB3 - 49TB mixed drives - JBOD
All software is updated asap.
I give my opinion from my experience i.e. I have (or had) that piece of equipment/software and used it!

Thanks,
The 4-bay is full (4 drives) and is used for a different application. I already have a pair of other drives i want to use, i just need a basic chassis to wind them up.
