Are there solutions available that tap into the PCI 4.0 tech that's now becoming more prevalent? Is there a roadmap if there isn't a solution currently available?

as this is NAS tech that mainly works at 10GbE max (with some super high end 40GbE exceptions), adding this to any NAS model would be wasted performance (and for crazy local virtualization performance you wouldn't really go for a NAS anyways)

I ask as I'm running 24bay NAS on a 80GbE backbone (bridge), which seems like the PCI 3.0 bus is limiting throughput of the SSDs I've installed (in theory 12GB/s, max of 3.5GB/s internally through the linux diag tool). About to build a large portable installation, so was hoping to see if PCI 4.0 would be opening up the internal bus a bit more and not be as limited. I'm supporting between 12 to 16 users on 10GbE each. I know I'm a unique case too... I work on large screens ( 90k pixels wide ) - so videos that are sometimes at least 500MB/s playback each.

I can't tell you how far in the future it will be before we make a NAS that has PCIe gen 4. But if you want faster speeds than what you can get with the 2.5" SSDs in the drive bays, you could consider a NAS with lots of Gen3 PCIe slots and use multiple QM2 cards for some very fast NVMe storage. TS-2888X has 8 gen3 PCIe slots. If you had say 6 QM2-4P-342 in there for 24 NVMe drives, you might get the speeds you want.

SSDs with controllers that can reach 6.5 or even 7GB/s (theoretical speed of PCIe 4.0 x4 is 7.88GB/s) are coming next year, so I’m waiting for them
