What Generation Ryzen inside TS-x77 Series

Hi All, I am now close to ordering either a TS-1277 or TS-1677 machine, I am in a place or thinking, do I wait a month or two or just go for it. I certainly cannot afford to do this very often and I would like to ask anyone who has recently purchased a TS-x77 nas, was the cpu a first gen or second gen?

I am aware that there is not a lot between the two generations, however, I dont like the idea of buying something late 2019 when the 1st Gen has been out for quite a while.

Also, for the established community members here, is there any particular release frequency that qnap launches new products? Of course we have CES 2020 coming up, but I dont know if QNAP does any hard/soft launches at that time? Is there any other dates to be aware? Thanks for your insight.

I would really like to buy a new high end nas with a current generation cpu. I know there is always something new, bigger, faster, better etc. But when I am this close to spending £2500+ then I want to get it right. :-)

Cheers, Colin.

the latest ryzen cpu afaik were only mentioned in the qts hero rackmount models. no word yet on a desktop nas mode just yet. so if you can't wait long enough to find out, or you don't want a rackmount nas, then the x77 is the one to go for.

personally i am still using the initial ts-877 release which sports a gen1 ryzen, and i don't fill left behind in terms of cpu passmark, cpu cores/threads. it works fine.

but i can understand how now it's been a while, and there are new ryzen gens out, that you rather get a newer gen ryzen. but i already explained the situation above :)

if you are still unsure, you can always contact qnap sales to enquire about how soon will the new ryzen desktop nas come out sporting the newer ryzen. or whether they opted to refresh the x77 series with newer ryzen gen cpus or not.

Thanks Moogle, I was kinda hoping that a new updated model could be announced, its just my luck that I buy one, then a week or two later, something get leaked / announced. This is a home nas for plex, vm's, labs etc, so its not what I would call for professional use (ie, making money from it). But I was interested to see the new hero models supporting 128GB ram, as this is very interesting to me. I dont want rack mount again, i just got rid of my old server rack as it takes up so much space etc. Anyway, I think I will drop the sales a line and check if they are at least shipping with Gen 2 ryzen's. I will buy the entry level, then buy the consumer 2700 cpu and upgrade once the warranty period has expired, or that I need more speed :-)

Thanks for your input, its always appreciated.
Colin.

I am on the brink of buying the 877-1600, as there is still the 20% discount on it.
aarbee mentioned a discount, maybe something worth considering as well? with black friday maybe you can also find a good deal.

i think chances of a desktop ryzen new gen seem quite likely especially after the recent intro of a rack mount qts hero. just no idea when.

i think it was mentioned in one of the previous interviews to qnap by spandotcom, that they may also have ecc ram nas models as well at some point.

not that it's 100% needed for zfs, but it definitely helps :' i'm wondering what the price difference is for those.

good idea. cauz i also was wondering where he found out about that promo.

i heard that someone managed to upgrade from 1600 to ryzen 2600 for the ts-x77 series, but not sure about 2700, but i don't see why it wouldn't work.

i think that the bios needed to be updated to the latest for that to work. if you bought a new nas, it should have the latest necessary bios :' ?

i guess the old cpu you can resell it. i just didn't bother doing that, because i was content as is, and didn't want to do the extra work for it

I tried to pm Aarbee, but I dont have enough rights / permissions yet. So, I replied on one of his posts asking him to pm me instead. The current cost of a plain 2700 is around £190 inc taxes here in the UK. So buying the entry level then upgrading would be a much cheaper way to upgrade. That said, I have to look at what could be saved with a potential discount and then the cost of buying the higher end with that discount applied. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Guys, since the CES2020 has come and gone with no real updates announced (yet) on these higher end NAS boxes, I have taken a look to see if any silent updates has happened with the TS-1677X and on the UK/English Qnap site, this model is not listed under the Enterprise Storage solutions. This is where it was normally advertised. I also checked the SMB NAS and they only show the TS-x77 models. Oddly enough, the TS-1677x IS displayed on the English -Global site. Not sure if this means something is coming soon.... fingers crossed.

Thanks for that, I have moved away from rack servers etc at home, so really I am hoping to keep with the Bigger nas tower boxes. I was hoping the hero release or at least future support on these 1277 or 1677 boxes would be good.

I contacted QNAP because I have the 1677x and wanted to know the status. And this is the reply I got Yes the 1677x series is phasing out, and we will have replacement model coming soon. Currently I do not have any future information, but the new model should be available in Q2 will keep you posted.

@bapw - Thanks for sharing, I think this sounds exactly like the plan to bring to market with the release of QTS Hero. Good to know your info, Q2 will be here soon enough.
