OS install and apps

Post by thompsondc »

Looking to get ts-453d, mostly for Plex media server, but also storage and other apps. Can/should the QTS operating system be installed on a m.2 nvme (with qm2)? Will this segregate media storage from operating system?
Separate question; I'm thinking that installing Plex media server on one HDD will keep it separate from the content, and allow rebuilding if something goes wrong.

you can install OS/DB on nvme (never use a single SSD ..always two or more in Raid1+)

Could help Plex performance (navigation, etc) a bit..depending on how much media you hold

Thanks. That makes sense to RAID 1 the OS. Can I install on one of the drives in the bays, then later migrate it to an m.2, to free up the bay?

you would need to install the os from.scratch to move it ..so better wait till you have the components ready

It could be a year or more... I won't even be able to get a second 12tb drive for another 6 months

Sorry. One more question/check. If I got the QM2-2S-220A, it can take 2 m.2 form factor SATA SSDs, correct? So I could get two Samsung 860 EVO SSD 500GB's, and run the OS and apps in RAID 1 on them, leaving the 4 bays of the TS-453D for solely storage?... Is that right?

Awesome. Thanks. I presume there really isn't much benefit of m.2 NVMe over SATA, for this type of implementation? I'm planning on probably 70% Plex, 20% other storage, and 10% retroarch gaming (NES and SNES only).

...and apparently I lied about the one more question...

There is a big difference in interface speed, but the jump in IOPS even on SATA(over spinning disks), should be a big step up in therms of DB performance.

I have a plex server on 5 spinning WD (non Pro) Red disks (951X) and I don't have issues with any slow plex response *shrugs*

awesome. I was mainly going for making better use of the drive bays for storage, and any increase in performance would just be "gravy". Thank you so much!

How big of SSDs do you think I'll need? Is 500GB for each enough, or can I get away with 250? I want enough for QTS, and installed apps.

if you don't want to use it as an SSD storage volume, 250GB should be fine

I have pretty much the same idea, but would like to use the SSDs for both OS+Apps as well as caching.
As one should use RAID1 (and so there is only 1 SSD usable and the second one the mirror of the first), I wonder if it would work to use 1TB SSDs and split them into partitions like 250GB for OS+apps and 750GB for caching.
Is that supported?
  • Device: TS-453D
  • Firmware: 4.5.2.1566
  • HDD: 4xWD-RED 3TB, configured as Raid 5 in a storage pool

there is no split usage on QNAP

any disk can only be one of those

-storage
-cache
-tier

no mix
