Nice replacement for the 1685. I actually really like the 1288x. If only for the price... Let's see.

Hi -
So I posted this news about h1288x and saw lots of views but just 1 reply. I wanted to hear what everyone here has to say about this machine.
I am strongly considering purchasing this machine. It would have the following functions,
- Files Server
- Photo Station
- Plex ( 1 User)
- 1 to 3 VM's

I give you an idea of why this enterprise-grade machine and not something cheaper. I don't easily upgrade. I build my PC 10 years ago and didn't upgrade until now and maybe it's time.
I like to follow the philosophy of "If it ain't broke, Don't fix It". With that said I think that investing in such an enterprise machine now would last me 10 + years mainly after the first 5 yrs when qnap would have better faster machines. I would like to say to myself that My machine is still running strong and therefore I still don't have a reason to upgrade" and or the cost is just not justifiable.

On the other hand, while I ponder. I have a feeling that Qnap might have a Ryzen based Nas coming up soon. Given the core and thread counts, Ryzen would be a better investment in the long run rather than this Xeon based

I would like to hear your pros and con's for this Nas and or Should I wait it out for the ryzen and then decide.

Please help me decide.

Thanks

looks like those models h1288x/h1688x will be available by the end of this month for about € 2500/€2900

since some months I am hoping/waiting for an upgraded ryzen x77 model but nobody knows what will happen and if I should wait more ;)

There is a new Ryzen tower model, TS-h973AX. It is 4 core 8 thread zen1 SoC. This choice of an SoC allows us to make something that is compact and lower cost than our 77 series Ryzen NAS. If you are hoping for an 8+ core Tower Ryzen, I am not aware of such a unit coming out soon. But in its price range, I think the TS-h973AX offers a good ratio of price to performance. It has 10GbE and U.2 and at least in the USA, you can get it with 32GB RAM for under $1000

For $1990? This might be my next NAS... I will to see a couple of reviews but it seems practically ideal for my use case and a perfect replacement to someone who had a TVS-1282. Finally brings in ECC memory on a modern Xeon (ice lake based). I would just upgrade the CPU to a W1290. It also already has a 550W PSU for a GPU.

1990 sounds appealing to me compared to the 3000$ price for the tvs1282T3 models. It's only missing the thunderbolt card and for that, the 3k prices still isn't justifiable. I am sure just like the TVS-1282 models had modest upgrades with the processor and thunderbolt card.. this model will also see the same.

So I've been looking for a small-form factor server chassis that solves all my needs as an all-in-one server and I had basically all but decided on the U-NAS NSC-810A until I discovered QNAP's latest models that now come with 3.3GHz W-1250 Xeon processor (similar to Intel consumer 10th gen using LGA1200 socket), Intel P630 UHD iGPU, 16-32GB ECC DDR4 RAM, dual 10GBe ports, 4 2.5GBe ports and two unused PCI 3.0 x4 expansion.

The TVS-h1288x (8 HDDs + 4 SSDs) and h-1688x (12 HDDs + 4 SSDs) are basically exactly what I was looking for in the exact form factor and saves me a whole lot of headache on slowing collecting similar parts (35W 1.9GHz Xeon 1290T + Asrock W480D4U with 8-SATA ports onboard + Enhance 600W PSU + Connect-X3 10G card) and building inside the tiny 810A chassis myself. I had a few questions if anyone can help:
  • Is the QNAP 100% compatible with Unraid as if I had built the server myself? Want to make sure I'm not running into HDD controller issues, fan speed control issues or the dozens of other things I'm not considering before dropping 2-3k on this
  • What kind of noise level does the h1288X / enterprise-level QNAPs generate vs. any other NAS device? The "noise level" in the specs is listed as "26dba" so curious if anyone else has a QNAP with similar noise rating and how it compares to your real life usage? Is there anything specific to these cases that would make it particularly louder vs. other common SFF case like the U-NAS 810A / DS380 / Node 804 etc.? I was generally okay with reviews of the U-NAS 810A but I'm worried from the one review I read on the h1288X that mentioned noise level being comparable to small rackmount (this will be going in a studio apartment so its a key concern)
  • Can the 80mm case fans be replaced with Noctua 120mm fans? Or am I limited to 80mm Noctuas as replacements to dampen noise? Is this a relatively simple fan replacement or could there be power/RPM/compatibility issues with replacing stock QNAP fans with Noctuas?
  • The power draw listed on the h1288x is 85W "idle" while the h1688x is 91W and the 872XT (i5 8400T 1.7GHz / 16GB RAM) is 41W. Is this entire difference in "idle" driven by the 80W TDP Xeon W1250 vs. 35W TDP i5-8400? Is there any way to absolutely minimize power draw when the server is doing nothing (i.e. HDDs off, barely any CPU / RAM usage)? Would unplugging the included 10GBe network card in the PCI slot significantly reduce power usage?
  • Can you upgrade the CPU / RAM in QNAPs down the line as long as its compatible with the socket? i.e. if LGA1200 supports 13th or 14th gen Intel Xeon in a few years, would they be compatible with these systems?
  • In the QNAP specs, it states that it supports GPUs "with dimensions up to 266 x 137 x 45 mm. 2. The 550W power supply unit provides an 8-pin (6+2) power connector and a 6-pin power connector for a graphics card". Does anyone know what the most latest and greatest GPU would be that fits in this setup (does a dual-slot 2070/3070 fit in these constraints?)
  • Does the TVS-h1288x / TVS-h-1688x support NVMe 4.0 or 3.0? I'm a bit confused on the naming conventions of " NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4"
Thank you all for your help!

looks like still not available in Europe, as most online shops don't give a delivery date

I didn't find any benchmarks of the above mentioned TS-h973AX but I think the CPU is limited and it's not an alternative for me

Found a good review here:

https://nascompares.com/2020/11/18/qnap ... re-review/

At this point I am considering building myself a ryzen7 5800X server with proxmox. The 10G card occupies the PCIex8 port which is a poor choice.
intel does not have nvme 4 but this is less important. The 2.5G ethernet is great and so is the ECC memory and the case (similar to the 1282). Overall not bad but my recent experience of very limited hardware compatibility due to dubious choices in OS kernel and BIOS is pushing me to reconsider. Will likely downsize my QNAP to just be an NVR/NAS and and move all the server/VM functionalities to a server when time comes.

You can actually switch the 10GBbe card to one of the PCIe x4 ports with a low-profile bracket (but agreed, it should've been this way out of the box)

I've finally made the switch from a 7 years old TS-469L to the TVS-h1288X. It's quite a beast! and I'm afraid it is loud when under heavy (full) load! Quite unbearable actually if in the same room. I've found that using only 4 cores of 12 in a linux VM, noise is ok and performance is still good. I'm getting 3.58fps on a 4K HDR x265 encode.
As per NVMe specs, it's PCIe Gen3.0 (1GB/lane) x4 which is 4GB total speed. Of course Gen4.0 is twice that (2GB/lane).
