Ok it's not about the drive but the volume capacitydolbyman wrote:you won"t be able to expand volumes that are over 16TB, the individual drive size does not matter
e.g.
so you couldn't swap the drives of a 8x4TB RAID6, to larger ones oven though the drives are under 16TB, but the volume is not

12,14,16Tb IronWolf Pro drive should be all good. For pricing you have to check it out! Black Friday's could maybe help to get good deal!phillipnyc wrote:Thanks again. I will try to expand my array and see if it allows it. Still building my Raid 5 from the three drives. It is going to take 1-2 days I think.
Let me get your advice on drive size.
My current used data (photography/videography) is at 24TB. I dont need 18TB drives x8 (in Raid 6) for a total of 108 TB. I am ok with less.
But I dont want to buy such small drives that I have to think about this every 1-2 years on buying all new drives.
Do you think its OK to get 12,14,16 TB drives in the IronWolf pro family?
It is much cheaper since they are 1-2 years in the market now and i dont think I will miss the 2TBs of space extra. Also it looks like the 16TB drives are registering as having more usable space.. than an 18TB once registered. They get 1.3TB eaten up once registered.
Anyways, anything wrong with the lower capacity ironwolf pros? Is there one capacity that is better than the others for speed or price?
Thanks again!
Just calculate your needs for long term and when you think it will be time to an overall upgrade.

so
st12000ne0007
st14000ne0008
st16000ne000
st18000ne000
are those the correct model #s for me above.. for the IW PRO drives?

Re: TS809-Pro... do I need to upgrade?
Hey guys
I got a bunch of the st16000ne000 now. I found them at a better price so I’m happy with them.
I don’t think I can afford 8x 16TB of them but I really only need 26tb right now... with some room to grow next few years. I think 40-50tb is more than enough for a long time for me.
That being said... I know a raid 5 array is not a backup. It’s just helps with downtime if a drive dies.
Is it better to do raid 10 for me inside the same qnap box, using some of the extra bays I will have?
Or have a full physical separate box for another raid array and off-site in the woods somewhere ! Or a cloud backup instead of a physical one.
What do you guys think

Re: TS809-Pro... do I need to upgrade?
I would recommend a Raid6, I don't think raid 10 is better for your needs. The difference from raid 5 and 6 is that raid 6 you can have two defect drives and still have all your data intact!
Normally, when you have a Raid 5 and you change a defect drive you have to rebuild the new replacing drive in the array and that will stress all the other drives (probably manufactured in the same batch)... Meanwhile, you are at risk that another drive fail in the process and then you are screwed!
Do that is why I prefer Raid 6 which give you one more chance in the rebuild process.
For you needed space (40-50Tb) you will need 5 drives. Which will give you 48Tb (3 x 16Tb). A little less because you don't get 16Tb of real space out of a 16Tb. Should be around 45Tb.
For the backup, anything can be good, preferably off-site. Can be another nas off-site, or simply some extra drives you manually backup regularly and put it somewhere safe! But you have to do the backups else if it's crash badly you lost everything since the last backup time!

Re: TS809-Pro... do I need to upgrade?
what do you do for the backup? I used to have a second QNAP TS809 and they would sync once a week but it would take 3-4 days each time to run the backup over the internet.
Sometimes I would bring the NAS physically to the off-site to do it faster
But maybe cloud storage is cheaper now than 10 years ago.. any good cloud providers you recommend? Maybe cheaper than buying another QNAP and Raid 6 with expensive drives

Re: TS809-Pro... do I need to upgrade?
In time I had a second nas and running couple rsync overnight every day.
Now I don't have the second nas, meanwhile since I changed all my 6Tb for 16Tb, I have at least 18 x 6Tb drives and doing backups manually. But this take time and I'm not going to do that forever!
I'm in the process of building a server using mergerFS and Snapraid (I could go with Unraid too) so that server be a JBOD and used has a backup..

Re: TS809-Pro... do I need to upgrade?
So having the 'backup' inside the same physical box is NOT advised?
Either Raid 10 or 2x Raid 0s or JBOD... need to take it out of the NAS to be safer and separate power supply etc?
Thanks for teaching me everything
I appreciate it

Re: TS809-Pro... do I need to upgrade?
OK....
I bought 2x 16TB iron wolf PRO
The 1st one arrived and it was sold as a SATA drive and the sticker on the front from seagate says SATA... but the connector is SAS jeez... have to return and get a refund
The 2nd one arrived from Amazon and it was not packaged correctly at all. No packing material at all. I connected it to the QNAP and the qnapo will not register it at all. Says no drive is found. The green light is blinking and its trying to spin it up but it will not spin up. They gave me a full refund and told me to keep the drive.
Not having good luck !
Is there anything I can try with the 2nd 16TB drive? Its free now so if i can get it working or find out whats wrong.. its worth it for me
Thanks for helping
