QNAP TS-673-4G vs TS-453 Pro CPU Performance

Post by jon96789 »

I currently have a TS-453A Pro with a (I believe an) Intel J1900 Celeron duo-core CPU. I am contemplating buying a QNAP TS-673-4G which has an AMD R-Series RX-421ND quad-core 2.1 GHz processor, Turbo Core up to 3.4 Ghz. I use the NAS as a media streaming device using DLNA via Wi-Fi across the home. My question is if there is an improvement with the AMD CPU and if so, how much.

The Celeron processor is adequate for a single stream but will bog down if there are more than one device accessing the NAS. How much of an improvement will the AMD have if any? I do not know how the AMD CPU compares with the Intel because of its architecture.

are you using Plexpass?

If so the AMD unit is unsupported for Hardware transcoding ..so effectively slower than the x53A

If all is happening in LAN, get Players that support direct play without the need for any transcoding ...that way at least a dozen 1080p playbacks should work at the same time

I don't need transcoding as all my files are 1080P. I use my PC to transcode files as it is pretty powerful, a 24-core AMD 3900X with 32GB RAM... I just need the NAS to stream videos from it's native resolution to my DLNA devices either via QNAP DLNA or Twonkey...

Speaking of which, would i be able to transfer my Twonkey license from my old to the new NAS?

Sorry I somehow read Plex (hence the transcoding question)

For DLNA requirments are super low..my 11year old 419p+ can serve several 4K HDR streams via twonky

so what exactly is bogging your CPU?

don't know... The problem is that when I am streaming a video and I fast forward and then press PLAY, the video hangs at that spot. I have to press STOP and then press PLAY to restart the stream at that stuck point. It happens on different devices so I think it is the QNAP. It even occurs using TWONKY.

Well, I bought the TS-673A and migrated everything over. There are some bugs in the firmware, mainly that Twonky does not work. Twonky is linked to your MAC address and TS-673A current firmware reports the wrong MAC address. According to QNAP, this will be fixed in an upcoming firmware update.

On a side note, I use a TS-853A to back up the primary NAS (the TS-673A). I only had seven bays utilized but now have to fill that last slot to match the capacity of the TS-673A (both will have 21.5 space). I just added the new drive and the an hour into the migration (which will take 48 hours!) drive 2 in the NAS died on me. Not sure whats going to happen now. The ridiculous thing is that the hard drive only has 64 hours on it (I boot the NAS twice a week to backup the primary NAS which takes about an hour).

Just an update. The latest firmware update fixed my Twonky and QuFirewall issues.
