Expansion card for TS-453B - one to rule them all?

Post by qowner »

hi all,
  • I'm looking for an expansion card for my TS-453B
  • I'll be getting a Ubiquiti switch that has a few SFP+
  • At the same time I wanted to upgrade my NAS to try and to be ready and take advantage of this speed (I'm hoping to hook the NAS up directly into one of the SFP+ ports)
  • I also connect a docking station to the NAS directly for external HDD backups via HBS
  • The docking station supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps)
  • I'll soon be upgrading my drives to 4x8TB WD Red Plus (WD80EFBX)

What I was hoping to find is a card that has the following:
  • 2 x M.2 slots
  • SFP+ port
  • USB 3.1 Gen 2 port (10Gbps)
Does such a card even exist?
And would it be compatible with my NAS?
Would the PCIe even handle it if all were ports/devices working concurrently?

I've tried searching for a card that has all 3 of these but haven't been able to find one, or at least find any information on why (unless it is the PCIe limitations).

I guess if I could only pick 2 of the 3, then maybe I'd go for the SFP+ & USB 3.1 Gen 2 port since it will address speed on writing to and backing up from the NAS. I'm not really sure if the benefits of the M.2 are inflated/applicable in real world data-back up use cases?

I hope I've provided all the relevant information but do let me know if you require any other info.

many thanks in advance for any help with this!

they're all listed here bra
https://www.qnap.com/en/product/series/interface-cards

stay away from the ones labelled EOL.

ALSO make sure your device is in the compatibility or there is no point getting it.

better yet go here
https://www.qnap.com/en/compatibility/? ... ategory=11

and if your device supports expansion cards it will be listed there along with what specs those expansion cards support. it's easier to read here what to get.

then you compare it to the product page to ensure it's not an EOL part you are getting.

like for myself using the ts-253d, the options offered with usb port added is

Code: Select all

QNAP	QXP-10G2U3A	Dual-port (Type-A) USB3.2 Gen 2 expansion card
https://www.qnap.com/en/product/usb3.2-expansion-card

or

Code: Select all

QNAP	USB-U31A2P01	Dual-port (Type-A) USB3.1 expansion card, PCIe Gen2 x2, low-profile bracket pre-loaded, low-profile flat and Full-height are bundled
https://www.qnap.com/en/product/usb3.1-expansion-card

i don't see any expansion where it has usb + all the other stuff you needed in a all in one solution. so you may need to get something like this, then another one (assuming you can use 2 expansion cards in the same nas) for the the other addons mentioned like sfp etc.

You have to check from the compability list page for your model :)

you can then buy these parts from qnap store here
https://shop.qnap.com/index.php?route=p ... uct_id=209

or here

thanks for the info Moogle.

Yeah, doesn't look such a card exists unfortunately. And Based on some research, it doesn't appear the NVMe's caching gives that much of a performance boost to the TS-453B in comparison to other larger/higher end NASs?

So I guess next best thing would be finding either a 10Gbe/SFP+ card or a 3.1 Gen 2 card - since the TS-453B only has 1 PCIe slot.
I was thinking that if there are 2 ports of either (ie, 2 x SFP+/10GBASE-T, OR 2 x 3.1 Gen 2) then I can use one for the network @ 10Gbe and then if there is some form of adapter (either from USB 3.1 to 10Gbe ethernet, or SFP+/10GBASE-T to USB 3.1 Gen 2), that could solve my needs. But alas, form initial search I was only able to find thunderbolt to SFP+ or USB 3.0 to 5Gbe adapters.
Are you aware of any such adapters? (or magically a card that has 1 x 10Gbe port and 1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 port)?

many thanks!

both together 1 card? nope. but maybe someone else might :'

if you use NON qnap cards then think u can use with qts for some of those features like caching, i don't think it will support that. so you best check about that before buying a non qnap addon.
