TS-653D vs TS-873A for Emby transcoding 4K HEVC
Hi. Seeing TS-653D has hardware transcoding capability, will TS-873A be able to compete with it? Not really the very big files for a 1 hour TV or 2 hour movie. Regular sized 4K, can TS-873A do it? TS-873A seems more future proof.

The 873A does not have a GPU builtin, so if hardware transcoding is used (e.g. Plexpass Plex) then the 653D will run circles around it.
But you could install a GPU in the 873A

Indeed, the TS-653D has built-in Intel Quick Sync that can handle 4k easily. The TS-873A doesn't have built-in graphics on the chip that can handle transcoding, but saw on reviews the processor is quite capable, except for the very big files. You are right the latter model can take GTX-1050 graphics card to do transcoding, but most of those take up 2 slots. There are a few 1 slot GTX-1050 cards, but looks very long. I wonder where I can get this info.

passmark of this embedded ryzen is not spectacular..so software transcoding might or might not work
if any tonemapping is involved all bets are off anyways ..that is cpu crazy territory

Understood. But from all angles, the TS-873A looks like a better choice am really eyeing this model, hence you see many questions on this forum about the model. I hope there are single slot GPUs that will fit so that this issue is solved already

Re: TS-653D vs TS-873A for Emby transcoding 4K HEVC
Is it possible to have Emby Server on a single board computer (SBC), and it's library points to TS-873A nas? I assume this way, when an unsupported iPad, iPhone, or any tablet streams shows, it's the hardware of the SBC that will do the transcoding. This eliminates 1 of the major hurdles for me to buy a nas without hardware transcoding. I'm looking at 2 simultaneous transcodings.
Is network bandwidth a problem? How much wired connection does an SBC need to be able to do this? The TS-873A already has 2.5 Gbps. Assuming SBC only has 1 GB port, will this be enough? Furthermore, I saw on servethehome where they reviewed one of the QNAP NAS (https://www.servethehome.com/qnap-tvs-h ... as-review/) they said that if a computer is connected to the QNAP nas via USB ports, it's given an IP. If that is the case, If you connect SBC's 1 GB port to network, and have SBC's USB (let's say 3.0) connected to QNAP nas directly (representing another network port), will that solve the bandwidth issue?
If it's possible, I'd rather have Emby server on separate SBC, beats buying a GPU that occupies both PCIe slot on the NAS. The SBC will definitely use less power as well. Plenty of options around, and I'm sure 1 that supports HEVC 10-bit will be around if not yet.

Re: TS-653D vs TS-873A for Emby transcoding 4K HEVC
I used to have Plex on a NUC as a server with a qnap holding the media.it worked fine....currently it's on a 951x .. I dont transcode hdr (direct play only) .. so that system is just fine for me
But 1GbE should be be enough .. even though I never used emby to say 100%

I want something cheaper, and lower cost though. That's for me. I think overall, an SBC, or NUC can do it. I'm just worried about the bandwidth of 1 Gbps.
