New guy looking for a QNAP product selector?

Post by NunyaBizness »

Greetings all. I have searched but did not find a good QNAP product selector (or online database to search for servers by feature and narrow my choices down).
In short, I have several requirements that force me into a 1RU (preferred) or 2RU unit that supports hardware transcoding.

Is there a product selector or an easy way to differentiate rackmount units vs desktop units?

In rackmount, there are not as many options for hardware transcoding.
But the 64 series has Intel Quicksync for hardware transcoding.

Thank you, that answers that. I have looked at the TS-464U-4G but I just wanted to ensure I was not missing something else.

As for model numbers etc, is there a standard way to identify rackmount models from desktop? I thought all TS- were rackmount, but that is not the case.
Is it models that have a U in the name? EG: TS-464U

You could browse the QNAP site, and just look at the pictures. But yeah, an U in the model name, after the number, means it's rackmount (there are some rackmount units without the U like the Dual Controller (dc) ones but I guess that's not what you're interested in).
Or you could use the product selector:

Thank you! THAT^^^ is exactly what I was looking for but struggled to find.
(I did not scroll far enough down the product page to see the "Resources" and the Product Comparison link.)

in addition to the qnap site product comparison selector, i suggest u also check out robs youtube channel. sometimes he explains the differences between some models. some of these are refreshes/replacement for older models. these sorts of things rarely get explained on the qnap comparison page. though to be fair sometimes the official qnap product intro may explain if a new model was a replacement for an older one or not.

few main points to consider for these nas

- how many bays?
- which bays? 2.5'' ? 3.5''? m.2 nvme or m.2 sata slots?
- support expansion addon cards?
- what cpu? how many threads? performance?
- release date for the nas model, and also the parts e.g. cpu
- QTS ( linux EXT4 MDAM) or does it also support QUTS hero (which is open linux zfs) ?
- what ports available, 1gbe? 2.5gbe? 5gbe? 10gbe? ethernet? SFP?
- how much ram?
- price? is this within your budget? or are there better alternatives for same price or less but with comparable or better hardware?
- how long can you expect firmware and app updates? If you purchase 2nd hand that was released years ago, then likely ur firmware update time may not be as long compared to a nas model that just got released as an example. when firmware is no longer maintained, u need a plan e.g. mine was reflash to truenas.

so basically know what to filter for, and keep some of these other things in mind when picking which nas model suits you best. that's my tip
