Re: TS-879 Pro RAM Upgrade options ?
Hello animaleyes76,
How are you going to deal with 95TDP of the new proc. in your TS-1079 ?
i also looked in to a i7-2600K for my TS-879 pro but didn't find a solution for the 30tdp more in full load.
do you know if the 16GB in your TS-1079 also will work in the TS-879 pro ? or is anyone else know the answer on this ?
Gr. Danny

The memory should defintely work as the motherboard of my 1079Pro is a 879Pro board.danny.bmw wrote:Hello animaleyes76,

As for the increased TDP i previously found some links that stated it was okay (i'll try to find them). In any case the new TS-EC880 (https://www.qnap.com/i/en/product/model ... 22&event=2) is being sold with the E3-1245 v3 (84W TDP) in basically the same chassis so i'm not convinced it's going to be a big problem.
I get the chip on Friday so i'll let you know how i get on.

Hello animaleyes76
Did you managed to get it working in your Qnap ? with you're new CPU.
What do you mean with this ?
The memory should defintely work as the motherboard of my 1079Pro is a 879Pro board.
is it possible for me to put 2 more drives sin my nas ? or is the backplane different ?

No. Same or similar components can be used in multiple models.danny.bmw wrote:is it possible for me to put 2 more drives sin my nas ?
The obvious reason, yes. Beyond, the model type (and specs) are written to the main-board config while production - even if the labels are the same, the functionality can vary.danny.bmw wrote:or is the backplane different ?

Yes all gooddanny.bmw wrote:Hello animaleyes76

I just meant that the same main board is used in the 879Pro and 1079Pro so the memory should definitely work.danny.bmw wrote:What do you mean with this ?

As Schumaku correctly stated the back plate is completely different from the main board you will not be able to add 2 more drives.

owke 8 drives is enough... :>
did you flash a new bios in your system ? or did you just swapped your CPU and Memory ?
with temps does your nas have now ? is this with idle or with full load ?
Thanks in advance.

just switch the CPU's (make sure it's the orignal version, not the v2/v3), replace the memory and that's it, nothing more to do.
As for temps. It's running about 45c idle (i3 was about 42c) and even under full load it's not been beyond 50c. All good i say

Re: TS-879 Pro RAM Upgrade options ?
2 things: firstly upgraded the ram to 8gb with two of these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00C ... E_AMZLdp_1) recognised instantly with no action needed on my part.
secondly should have come here to read the adventures of an i7 in the x79
on a somewhat related point re. temps if you could give some feedback to http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=182&t=104279 that would be awesome
thanks

Re: TS-879 Pro RAM Upgrade options ?
I am using the original heatsink but the speed that it seems to shoot up from 40 to over 60c (when using smartfan settings) has me wondering. For most tasks it hangs around 45c though, was media transcoding that sent it up fast.danny.bmw wrote:Hello,

If you don't mind the noise factor then sticking the fan on "medium" keeps it at under 40c most of the time and under 45c under full load. Not sure the Noctua will be much more quiet but i might try it.
Cheers

Re: TS-879 Pro RAM Upgrade options ?
I used the Noctua and it actually made things hotter as it pushes the hot air over the HDDs.
Stock cooling on "medium" speed was okay for me (a bit noisy but no problem)
Xeon E3-1245V3 isn't going to work, the original board is sandy bridge, it didn't even work with ivy bridge (v2) due to no bios update, so 3 is out of the question.
3 cpus available here
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-E3-1 ... Swt6ZWU5rr
or 2 of the slightly slower E3-1240s
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-Proc ... SwBahU6FOz
No idea with 32GB though, pretty sure 16gb was the max.
