TS-879 Pro RAM Upgrade options ?

Hi there,

Just recovered from a HORRIBLE month.

Had a (band new!!) TS-879 Pro running at a customers' premise.
On my request (please upgrade the RAM to 2 x 2 Gb), he added (only) ONE (original! QNAP) 2 Gb ram module, he couldn't add 2 x 2Gb as he had ran out of stock.
The total memory was now 1 + 2 = 3Gb

Took it back to the customers' premise, and fired it up, checked it and thought: all systems go.

well.... NOT
from that day on, I experienced some really irritating problems, like unreliable TimeMachine backups (customer has Macs only) on 15 systems, and the worst problem was that (among other formats) a Photoshop file that was read into Photoshop, was NOT readable anymore after it was saved to the server after a change in that file.

I was getting really nervous, and yesterday, the system really got whacky, and was hanging and the Public share was not accessable anymore.
I asked the customer to switch off the server, and switch it on again.....

Well, it didn't even boot anymore...
So today I picked up the TS-879 Pro from the customers premises, drove to the dealer and said: FIX THIS.. (at gunpoint... almost)

He first pulled out all 8 HD's, but still it wouldn't boot.

Then he removed that 2Gb ram module that he had put in 1 month before (@ purchase time), and whoop-tee-do: it booted again.

Whew!!! what a RELIEF that was!!!

THE QUESTION now is:

I don't want to take ANY risk anymore, so is the a memory test executable available to run on the QNAP, that does a memory burn in test??????

Would be MUCH appreciate if anyone could share his experience with 'in-circuit' RAM testing in a QNAP.

OK so recently updated to 4.1 official, still not all the RAM is available...

You can enable virtualization station in the bios. this would enable the extra memory.

Not so!!

I'm now happily running my QNAP TS-E879U-RP on 16 Gigs and virtualisation is running like a charm. Very fast AND stable!!

The only reason: The two DIMM modules are not reachable easily on the TS-879 Pro desktop box - that's why QNAP does not "support" more.

Ok just enabled virtualization in the bios but no dice.

The bios only shows 4gb so it's not even the kernel but on a bios level QNAP limits this machine to 4gb of RAM, a shame if you ask me.

If you have installed more than 4 GB, please contact QNAP Customer Service on http://helpdesk.qnap.com/ and reference MantisBT ID 2171. QNAP does not find any systematic issue prohibiting to install more than 4 GB DRAM - neither in BIOS, nor in the Kernel/Firmware (tested with 2 * 4 and 2 * 8 GB DRAM on QTS 4.1.0 20140612).

I have just upgraded my TS 879 Pro from 2 x 1GB memory to 2 x 2GB memory because Virtualization station was requesting more than 2 GB. Everything went fine. Now the system information say I have 3846,7MB memory and the Virtual Station is working.

Just for the people that wants to do the same.

Not sure if the TS-879 will use ECC.
On my TS-879U-RP, using ECC made it become a TS-EC879U-RP.

Even though this post is really old I thought I'd post my experience.

Just upgraded my TS-1079 Pro to 16GB. The actual motherboard actually says "TS879Pro" which is not that much of a shock. Motherboard revision was v.1.1

I installed Kingston KVR13N9K2/16 (Specs: DDR3, 1333MHz, Non-ECC, CL9, 1.5V, Unbuffered, DIMM, ) with firmware 4.1.2 20141229 and the NAS recognised everything first time.

Xeon E3-1245v1 on way. Hooray

Models can share the or similar components - product differentiation is made by the factory configuration settings (model, serial, I/O space, ...) and obviously the storage backplane.
