Upgrading CPU

Post by X1XnobleX1X »

Hello Qnap fourms,
I'm about to purchase a Qnap 470 and was wondering if anyone has ever upgraded the CPU on this NAS?
I know I can be done, but was it difficult? Anything I should know before commencing it apart from voiding your warranty?

You can upgrade to any Ivy Bridge socket 1155 CPU as long as the thermal envelope is less than or equal to 65W.

Advanced search should have included many answers to your question, including post: [HOW TO] Upgrade TS-x70 CPU and Memory.

It may or may not work since that CPU is a 77W part:

http://ark.intel.com/products/65719/

Try to stay with 65W or lower to meet the spec of the original CPU.

the I7-3770T, is the only one suitable from that range. it is lower thermal watts, also the 3770k does not have itel vPro or Intel virtuliazation tech for directed I/O nor trusted execution technology.

they are compared here http://ark.intel.com/compare/65523,65719,65525

scan have the 3770t listed on their site, but as a pre-order.

The main thread with i7 upgrades was locked, so i will try here :)

What kind of CPU workload are you getting?

I am Transcoding/streaming 2x1080p movies and my CPU is variying between 7-98% with plex media server.

Anybody else getting such a high workload with the i7?

Does Plex a just in-time transcoding (what I doubt) or a playback triggered background conversion of the complete media file (much more likely) - what will take less time due to the higher CPU power available.

What processes are high up in the CPU queue? Provide some sample output of

If there is processing demand, the CPU is available and will be used.

I am not sure how it transcodes but I know they are not transcoded as they are. Usually it buffers for 10 seconds before it starts playing. So on the fly I guess.

It seems to have been because I was running a lot at the same time and copying large amount of data at the same time. Seems better now, around 20-50 %

I have not checked the processes.

As I understand the plex transcoding, plex will fill a buffer that's user defined in the app. After the buffer is full the system will stop transcoding. When the buffer is nearing empty due to the client playing the video, the transcode function will kick in again until the buffer fills. Over time you should see the proc bouncing from close to zero usage to full utilization. There are other details involved but that's the basic process as I understand it.

Afraid, you dig at the wrong place - first, the QNAP Presales is certainly not appropriate, and secondly Plex is proprietary closed source. Challenge Plex please.
