Re: TS-451 memory upgrade (compatibility)
16GB SUCCESS! on the TS-451 Works Great So Far.
I just upgraded my memory, booted, and it immediately recognized the additional memory. This will help with virtualization. I purchased this kit here:
http://amzn.com/B007B5S52C Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3-1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) 204-Pin SODIMM Notebook Memory CT2KIT102464BF160B / CT2CP102464BF160B
I'm not sure why they are reporting the maximum memory is 8GB. Will be doing further testing, but so far so good.

I am: Because this is the limit as specified by Intel - as mentioned several times in the forum already.jw15851 wrote:I'm not sure why they are reporting the maximum memory is 8GB.
TS-x51/HS-251 - Intel ARK: Intel Celeron J1800
TS-x53 - Intel ARK: Intel Celeron J1900
I don't know if it's a Visualisation Station or memory management unit limitation ... you can't use more than 8 GB for a single VM if I have it right. And I don't care - because it's not supported, and I doubt QNAP will raise the limit for the above reasons.Memory Specifications
Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type*) 8 GB
*Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type)
Max memory size refers to the maximum memory capacity (in GB) supported by the processor

16GB Success on TS-651
using
2x Crucial 8GB DDR3(L) 1600 SODIMM 1.35V CL11 CT102464BF160B
Working fine. Did test memory adresses between 8GB-16GB by running multiple big VMs. No problems occured.
Is Intel trying to fool its customers, or did the Linux kernel guys find a way to circumvent this limitation (some virtual registers kind of stuff)?
Exchanging it was really easy. You don´t even have to pull out our HDDs like shown in some YouTube Videos. Just unscrew 3 screws in the back, pull back the cover, look at the outside of the board for the RAMs. The board is secured with a transparent plastic cover having cuts at the RAM socket location, so you don´t need to unscrew the board screws - especially not the one with the QNAP Quality Seal.

Re: TS-451 memory upgrade (compatibility)
The other way round - two modules allow the system to use two memory channels - so blunt theory, the performance (for both the CPU and the GPU reserved DRAM) is higher.8bitkid wrote:1) Any reason to get a single 8gb module vs. two 4gb modules?
Most likely a question of availability any costs - 1600 MHz modules are much more common, and available at lower prices.8bitkid wrote:2) What is the maximum speed? According to http://files.qnap.com/news/pressresourc ... 608-RS.pdf it is 1333, but the QNAP replacement http://shop.qnap.com/index.php?route=pr ... uct_id=131 is a single 1600 module.
My TS-451 does run the pair of Kingston KVR16LS11/4 (PC12600/1600 MHz capable) modules at 1333 MHz on QTS 4.2 20150617 (public beta):

Re: TS-451 memory upgrade (compatibility)
I bought a 453mini and tried 2 different set of 2x8gb and both sets fail to boot.
Should I return it and get 453pro?

TS-451 memory upgrade (compatibility)
One set is PNY DDR3 1600Mhz CL11.
The other set is Crucial DDR3 1600Mhz CL11 1.35v or 1.5v unbuffered non-ECC CT2K8G3S160BM

Upgraded mine to 8GB with Crucial CT2CP51264BF160B (2x4GB kit) and worked fine.

There is also a ....160BJ 2x4GB kit. This also works in my 251.occamsrazor wrote:Upgraded mine to 8GB with Crucial CT2CP51264BF160B (2x4GB kit) and worked fine.

Re: TS-451 memory upgrade (compatibility)
Hello,
Did anyone who claims that 2x8Gb KVR16LS11 ram works... fully tested them?
It is possible for system to see all but not being able to access it all... so, can someone try to fill up more than 8gb in a virtual machine?
1) I`ve contact Intel and they reply:
Thank you for your email. The Max Memory Size specification on the ARK site refers to total memory size. You can see more detailed memory information in the product datasheet:
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ ... sheet.html
There, in chapter 4.1 is:
"There are 64 GB (36-bits) of physical address space that can be used as: • Memory Mapped IO (MMIO – IO fabric) • Physical Memory (DRAM)
The CPU core can access the full physical address space, while downstream devices can only access processor DRAM, and each CPU core’s local APIC.
Peer-to-peer transactions are not supported. Most devices map their registers and memory to the physical address space."
So i can't find any limitation to 8Gb ram as they say on ark site....
2) I`ve contact Kingston and here is their reply:
"Thank you for contacting Kingston Technology.
Please note that to date we have only tested the 4GB memory module in this system and we are unable to guarantee that an 8GB module will work in this system.
As a result, we can not suggest any 8GB memory upgrades for this system.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

Re: TS-451 memory upgrade (compatibility)
Adding this comment just in case others come across it in a Google search... I can't speak for the 451, but I as well as at least one other has had problems with the Crucial memory (CRUCIAL CT51264BF160B) in my TS-453 Pro (Intel-based) See thread about "dashboard resource monitor not working." My problem was resolved by switching to the Kingston equivalent.

Does the system information show up complete - or do you see these data like "Total memory" or detailed "Memory Slots" information incomplete, resp. marked "--" or "(-- / --)"?bnevis wrote:Adding this comment just in case others come across it in a Google search... Yes, it appears complete in my case (this particular memory with this particular model).schumaku wrote:Does the system information show up complete - or do you see these data like "Total memory" or detailed "Memory Slots" information incomplete, resp. marked "--" or "(-- / --)"?
