Hi!

I want to buy this unit to make a NAS running Plex. Will the 1gig version will do the job to transcode at 1080p or should I buy the 4G version or just upgrade to X RAM? I just saw the new TS-451+ what is the difference? On Qnap website there is no data for this unit on the compare function.

Thanks

DDR3L 1600 (PC3L 12800)
• Cas Latency 11

Manfrog, according to the compatible specs, the G.Skill should work. The G.Skill F3-1600C9D-16GRSL (2x8GB) have been reported as working in a TS-670 i7 on the German QNAP forum. As discussing in another topic, the Crucial definitively will work.

I see most of you used DDR3 1600 PC3-12800.

However, I am wondering if I will have any problems if I use DDR3 1866 (PC3-14900) on my 'on-the-way' QNAP TS-451.

I am particularly looking at this: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Laptop Memory Model F3-1866C11D-16GRSL

No your memory wont work because its not ddr3L(l for low voltage 1.35v) . But theoretical and my experience tells that the memory will be able to down clock to a lower speed.

In laptops a higher mhz memory will be down clocked to the limit of the laptops specs.

So a 1600mhz memory in a 1333mhz system will become 1333mhz.

Even inserting lower mhz memory than the specs will give better battery run time in a laptop.

But some computers wont accept 1333mhz my gigabyte brix for example only accepted 1600mhz 1.5/1.35v and would not boot at all with 1333mhz 1.5volt. Due to the motherboard design.

I am also interested in memory to buy for ts-451+. Does it use the same as the normal 451?

The G.Skill 1866 (G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Laptop Memory Model F3-1866C11D-16GRSL) did not work at all. Not even only one installed in Slot A. Though the RAM specs state these are rated for 1.35v.

I tried with a DDR3L model, Patriot Signature 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600 (PC3L 12800) Laptop Memory for Ultrabook Model PSD38G1600L2S - QNAP TS-451+ only recognizes the slot A (8GB).

Is there some setting/unlock option I am missing? I am inclined to use the crucial CT102464BF160B (8gb x2) that members reported to work and recognize 16gb.

All works fine! System recognize the 16GB and also the NAS and the virtualization station.

After reading this nice thread, I bought two Kingston KVR16LS11/8 modules and am now running 16 GB in my TS-451.

I got 2X4GB Kingston modules for my TS-251 and works great. I will say in response to the Plex question that I've found Plex is a pig (or my large library makes it a pig). I was running out of memory with 1GB trying to run Plex. Now memory is not an issue. But at times CPU gets pegged when using Plex client on an Apple TV 4th gen. Starts off good flipping through pics and then clocking and CPU pegging. Video takes a very long time to load but probably Apple TV client issue.

Hi Everyone,

I have a recently purchased a TS-451+. It came with 2GB of memory, but I was keen to bulk this out as much as possible. I came straight to this thread, read your advice, bought a 16GB kit from Amazon (Crucial 8GBx2 DDR3-1600 CT2KIT102464BF160B) for $68, and installed. Worked perfectly.

Just wanted to thank everyone for donating their knowledge and opinions to this thread. It helped me a lot.

So in my case for new TS-451, can I just use any DDR3 SODIM from a laptop 2x 4 GB modules as long as they're both identical ?

No  kind of, but not that generic ... the NAS does (for example) require 1.35V DDR3L, requires single channel resp. can't work with dual-channel-SO-DIMMs,, Compare the notebook memory you have in mind with the commonly known working Crucial or Kingston modules.
