FWIW: The TS-x53A dmidecode here does show a max of 8 GB, too (as per the Inhell specs) - but the units works on 16 GB like a charm.NassyMcNasface wrote:I'm on TS-451+, not sure why other people get max 64gb with dmidecode, but I show max 8gb.

The official kigston website also has recommended RAM model for each NAS model too.

Not sure if this is correct forum, but TS-451A doesn't boot with Kingston KVR16LS11/8. Neither with 2 nor with 1 module.

Valuable report, thank you. Community experience on TS-x51A DRAM update is limited ... but then, when mentioning KVR16LS11 we're commonly talk of Kingston.JohnD11 wrote:Not sure if this is correct forum, but TS-451A doesn't boot with Kingmax KVR16LS11/8. Neither with 2 nor with 1 module.

TS-253A Crucial 8GB CT102464BF160B works
In my two QNAP TS-253A units, memory Crucial 8GB DDR3L 1600 MHz (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204pin 1.35V CT102464BF160B works perfectly.
One 8 GB works alone and 2x 8 GB works also. Memory is reported and tested correctly. For 8 GB configuration, my VM can get up to 6,5 GB RAM, as expected. Of course: as manual says you can not use different sized memory if 2 memory banks are used.
Note: most sellers in my country advertise this memory as DDR3, so do not let that confuse you. If part no. is CT102464BF160B then it is DDR3L meaning 1.35V and works.

Re: TS-451 memory upgrade (compatibility)
Are you guys assuming that the motherboard has a dual channel memory controller because it has two slots, or have you gotten confirmation from QNAP engineers. FYI: two SODIMM slots does not necessarily mean it's a dual channel MB. Usually a MB manufacturer will use two different colored slots to denote that it has a dual channel controller onboard.
If in fact the northbridge does have a dual channel memory controller then it's important to use a matched set (kit) of DRAM because the manufacturer packages similarly performing modules for the fastest possible speed.
If in fact it's not a dual channel memory controller then the fastest speed is obtainable with a configuration utilizing the least number of modules/memory chips, as the increased number of electronic components increases resistance on the memory bus thus slowing performance. For instance: two 512MB chips on a memory module is worse, slows performance, rather than one 1GB chip on the module. So at any given module size, the modules with the least number of chips are the fastest modules.
So if it's not in fact a dual channel memory controller, then one 8GB module with the least number of memory chips will perform the best (fastest), also creating less heat (less current load), which in fact equates to less wear and tear on motherboard components.
So I was wondering if anyone knows for 'certain' that the TS-451 MB has a dual channel memory controller onboard?

Re: TS-451 memory upgrade (compatibility)
Multiple colours are used in case of multiple pairs of slots. There is not even a standard ... same colors may either indicate that the sockets belong to the same channel (pairs should be installed to differently colored slots) or they may be used to indicate that pairs should be installed to the same color (each socket of the same color belongs to a different channel). With just two slots ... figure. Alternate approach are silk printed numbers btw., too. Historically, there had been other resons for multiple slots ... ie. module data width of 8, 16, or 32 bits only, where multiple slots had ben used to reach 32 or 64 bit...JoBrCoGB wrote: FYI: two SODIMM slots does not necessarily mean it's a dual channel MB. Can't see any reason that an SoC (this is what the J1800/J1900 are) with two memory channels should not be implemented with two memory channels. Based on the reuirement to install the same modules in both slots and based on the dmidecode output, please take your own conclusions. My TS-451 does run the pair of Kingston KVR16LS11/4 (PC12600/1600 MHz capable) modules:JoBrCoGB wrote:So I was wondering if anyone knows for 'certain' that the TS-451 MB has a dual channel memory controller onboard?

Re: TS-451 memory upgrade (compatibility)
Thank you for your time, as for most of us, it's the one thing that, in the end, we want more of.
My point was 'knowledge' based on facts versus 'belief' based on 'assumption.' As far a them saying:
"When installing two memory modules, please ensure that they are the same size and ideally use the same type of RAM for both memory slots."
I learned all about such possible ploys at university during "Intro to Business" class, where I found business ethics to be quite inferior to mine. It starts with allusion, and if challenged, plausible deniability. Like, 'an equal resistive load requirement on both slots due to power supply architecture longevity.'
I mean, why exclude touting another perk, among a plethora of others that have been touted, that are 'all' solid selling points, for those in the know, to secure a sale?
I want and expect, no allusions, "Just the facts man, just the facts!"
No swamp land for me, my friend! As ignorance is never bliss!
So I'm wondering if anyone on the QNAP company payroll is willing to state emphatically, that in fact the TS-451 MB has a 'dual channel memory controller' onboard?
Does anyone 'know?'
P.S. One also has to wonder why they, themselves, sell a single 8GB module to max out the TS-451!
As of yet I've not seen any QNAP supplied datasheet's, whitepaper's or schematics referencing the TS-451's MB components, which is what I'm used to seeing.

Wrong channel. This is a community forum. You talk to other QNAP onwers and users, not to QNAP here.JoBrCoGB wrote:So I'm wondering if anyone on the QNAP company payroll is willing to state emphatically, that in fact the TS-451 MB has a 'dual channel memory controller' onboard?
There is neither an external northbridge nor a dedicated memory controller: Each TS-451 is build based on a J1800 SoC, which has two memory channels. In 10+ years with multiple NAS barnds/makers, I've neither seen a single product review talking about missing internals nor any complaints o the memory performance.
QNAP does - like many other makers of embedded and NAS systems - not publish any internals of their hardware designs.JoBrCoGB wrote:As of yet I've not seen any QNAP supplied datasheet's, whitepaper's or schematics referencing the TS-451's MB components, which is what I'm used to seeing.

Re: TS-451 memory upgrade (compatibility)
QNAP hardware PM confirmed the TS-451 does make use of the two memory channels for the two slots.
