turns out it didn't help in the end. Back to failing first backup

Seems like overkill. Am on 10.15.2 (not beta) - I followed the QNAP guide https://www.qnap.com/en-us/how-to/tutor ... as-via-smb which after setting up everything on the NAS, Section 2.0 instructs how to connect to the NAS volume in Finder using smb://, THEN select that disk in TM. No issues with the backup.
