How Long Should A Disk Migration To New NAS Take?

Post by tbfohman »

Disk Migration from TS-469L to NEW TS-435D:

1. Used Qfinder Pro to upgrade TS-453D to latest Firmware.
2. Shut down TS-453D.
3. Installed disks from TS-469L into my new TS-453D with power off.
4. Powered up TS-439D.

After power up, Qfinder cannot find NAS
All disk status lights show high (constant) activity for approximately 60 minutes now.

Question:
Does a disk migration normally take this amount of time?

I'm hesitant to power down the new NAS while such disk activity in going on....

Much thanks in advance

I have never done a migration (always started each NAS from scratch) but I'd think the bootup process should be rather fast. (not hours)

And I think the old volume would become a crippled legacy volume anyways (due to the age of your old NAS) so no 'conversion' would be needed.

Without a way to troubleshoot the new NAS (have you tried to connect HDMi to a monitor?), diagnostics would be hard

A TS-469 is already a cat2 NAS.
So if OP used a pool migration will be possible without a crippled legacy volume.

Unless it was in use so long that the volume was created before these units got the update to LVM ..but yes, fair point

Dolbyman - Is there a way to the admin console via HDMI without the Deskstation app? Right now, monitor to NAS says "no input"
FSC 830 - I did have a storage pool on the 469.. From my research, this should be an "automagical" process.... *sigh

I didn't get a choice of any type of migration.
Powered on the 435D with the disks from the 469, and Qfinder couldn't find the NAS.... and the disk activity lights started.. they're still showing very high disk activity. (or at least, they're blinking very quickly
You guys think I'll have to do a hard-restart?.. press power button 1.5 seconds = graceful shutdown?

BTW, Before I started I checked the disk migration compatibility list and a move between these two units showed good.

So, the whole story is:
I came home after a thunderstorm obviously took out power for a bit.
I have APC UPS's on all of my infrastructure gear - router, switch, NAS, etc.
My NAS was set to shutdown after 5 minutes of power out, but I think the UPS was dumb and fully discharged.
My 469 NAS was completely dead - no red light in the back, and no reaction to power button.
I even put a new system battery in it... pretty sure she just gave out after ~10 years
I ordered the 453D and received it this afternoon.

So, I don't know if the shutdown instruction from the UPS actually worked, and there was a sudden (ungraceful) shutdown.
Maybe the new NAS is scrubbing (RAID 5) right now - that's why I'd LOVE to get to the Admin console and see.
I wasn't able to plan this upgrade properly... I didn't get all the users, permissions, shares, settings, etc., I normally would in preparing for an upgrade like this.
So, I'm crossing my fingers that the "system" will fully restore on the new NAS

I think HDMI only shows an output during post and then when the HDStation is loaded (or a VM is outputting to HDMI), worth a shot in case there is a post error.

How is you Backup situation? (a RAID is not a backup)

============

Are you sure the NAS was shutdown and not killed by the lightning strike ?

Hey Dolbyman - I do have a backup set.
And, no... I don't know if the lightning strike took out the old NAS, but the UPS is advertised to take a strike (to some extent, I'm sure ;-)
That's why I'm dying to see what the admin console says is happening...

Come to think of it, she might be stuck in POST - I can't remember if I heard the long beep..
Actually, maybe that's why Qfinder can't find it.. networking service hasn't fired up yet... (?)

if you have solid backups, you could try to force a reboot of the NAS

I already did. For some reason, my switch says the connection to the NAS is 100mb - I have a gigabit network.
Any suggestion?

I'm getting ready to wipe and restore backups.
This kinda **.

I surely appreciate your help

there is a site that can check whether migration is possible or not, so there is no guesswork involved
https://www.qnap.com/en/nas-migration/

i've done migration before if only to try it. for something like a 4x 4tb raid5, took like 1-2 days under (probably 1 day or less if i recall correctly)

that said, i recommend doing a clean reinstall. wipe the drives if they aren't brand new, and just reinitialize from scratch. obviously you should have a backup for your data to elsewhere PRIOR to doing any clean installs (because ur wiping all the data on the nas so they will be gone).

after you're done doing the reinitialization, then you do back your qnap settings manually (this includes setting up your original shares), then after restoring your data from your backup (i have my backups on my other qnap nas, so i use hybrid backup sync to recover them to my other nas for example).

it takes roughly 1-2 days to finish all this (my example is a 4x 4tb raid5 setup)

Thanks for everyone's comments - I've wiped and made a clean install... *gads

A major problem... the TS-453D will only connect at 100Mbs on my gigabit network. Both my Netgear switch and QTS say so.
And yes... my router's locked by Spectrum, so I can't set the adapter speed there.
All of my other devices are connecting thru this router/switch at 1GB.
Has anyone heard of a bug in QTS Ver. 5.0.0.2055?

Hey Dolbyman - yesah.. tried different cables, different LAN ports on the router, rebooting/resetting....
I received (rather pushed) Spectrum's "upgraded" DOCSIS 3.1 modem and WiFi6 router.
The router's locked, except for very rudimentary settings..

I'm on my way to pick up a 3rd party router... prolly a Nighthawk.

Tally-Ho!, and again, much big thanks
