Backup T451 to Buffalo Terastation

Post by JeffGaines »

I want to back up my QNAP TS-451 to my Buffalo Terastation which is on the same home network.
Hybrid Backup Sync only seems to offer backup to an attached USB drive or another QNAP. I installed Nakivo Backup but when I click on the icon another tab opens in my browser but the "Log In" button seems to be disabled.
Is there a way of backing up to a non QNAP NAS or do I need to use software on my PC to do this?

You need to create a "storage space" first in HBS, i.e. a remote SMB server (or rsync server for a Linux/-ux system).
If you choose an Active Sync Job (not a Backup Job), you can can sync the data from your QNAP to the Buffalo.

I assume buffalo terrastation is a nas ya?

then it should have a rsync server functionality. You need to enable RSYNC server.

Then on your QNAP, use the hybridbackupsync to create a backup job that points to that rsync server (fill in the credentials), then test that it connects fine. Then you can run the hbs job to backup to terrastation.

The opposite is true, if you rather use terrastations own native backup software. You just do in reverse. On qnap there is a rsync server u can enable which you also setup credentials for. Then enter these credentials on buffalos backup app side for rsync.

very ez

In this video for buffalo i saw the rsync setting listed
https://youtu.be/-o16o4oUFr4?t=186

Active Sync Job = this translates to a Pull similar to truenas setting. So if u do a active sync job on qnap to buffalo, this will PULL the data from buffalo onto qnap.

So usually when i am backing up from QNAP (NAS A) to another NAS (NAS B), i use a rsync one way sync. So the data goes from NAS A to NAS B (this is referred to as a push). In the job rules, i set delete duplicate data at destination

Plz be sure to test your backup jobs using dummy test data BEFORE commiting to using it for actual use (for both BACKUP and RESTORE). Understand first how it works, and once you are confident enough in it, then you can then use it.

Many thanks for both your replies :-)

I managed to create a storage space on the Buffalo NAS then use Hybrid Backup Sync to back the QNAP up to the Buffalo.

I have a QNAP 431 arriving tomorrow to replace the Buffalo (it's slow and SMB 1 only) which should make things even easier.

Thanks again!
