Restoring NAS from HDD silently fails

Post by GT_Forum »

Hi,

Situation. I have a TS-251 with two 4TB HDDs in Raid 1. The TS-251 died, but I believe that the HDDs are fine.

I have another TS-251 running same OS Version (5.0.1.2248). I moved both HDD from the dead NAS to the one that seems to work.
When the NAS boots up it starts the "Smart Installation System" menu.

I select
  • "Start Smart Installation"
  • Keep current Firmware Version (5.0.1.2248)
  • It detects that Hard Drives with QNAP Signature
  • I Select to "Restore Factory Settings"
  • The device then progresses from 0-100% and shows a success screen.
  • The Device Reboots

After the device reboots, instead of showing a restored NAS, it again just shows the "Smart Installation System" menu.

So it looks like the Restore silently fails when it said it succeeded?

All I want is to retrieve the data off of these drives.

(I have backups of these drives, I just don't have the last 24 hours of backups)

Is there
a) something I can do to make the restore work
b) Any other way to get the data off of the Drives

Any help would be appreciated.

What you did is called NAS migration and actually I would expect that in a same NAS nothing else needs to be done.
Did you insert the disks when the NAS was powered off or did you insert them during the NAS was powered on?

The correct way is to insert the disks and power on NAS. In that case, all should be done automatically.

Thanks for the reply.

The disks were inserted when the NAS was powered off and then the NAS turned on.

If that is the expected result, how would I log in and access the data?

No, thats not the expected result. The NAS should boot without any smart installation wizard.
At least, if NAS and firmware have been identical with broken NAS.

In that case a ticket at QNAP support is the best choice. No idea, if the smart installation wizard did anything unwanted in that case.
If the disks have been configured as a static volume and not as a pool, you me be able to access the data by connecting one disk (raid1) to a Linux PC.
