Will this latest release maintain existing Smart Versioning?
Or will it trash em all, start fresh anew?

I already lost months worth of smart version backups in previous update.
I dont wanna throw away my 6 weeks worth of smart version backups.

Yea... sadly they're doing the same, what a waste of backup time and effort. Can qnap fix this? I want my old versions back so I can continue updating my backups instead of starting a new one....

Hello
With the new HBS3 version (3.0.191016) i still have the same problem.
All the RTRR (Loca Backup) jobs using Versioning and WITHOUT QuDedup keeps at 0% forever :x .
Are there a way to user Versioning WITHOUT QuDedup now?.
If try to make a new job (from one disk to another in NAS) using versioning i was forced to use QuDedup  .
QuDedup is a great idea, but should be OPTIONAL. Deduplication uses a lot of CPU and Disk resources and not make sense in Small SOHO NASes.
I openned a Support Case with QNAP but after 2 weeks still researching...
Regards

How can I decrypt my files if I have set up a 'sync' job with encryption for the cloud? What is the use of a synchronisation folder if I can't download or reverse sync and decrypt the files from the cloud when they are destroyed or overwritten locally?

As far as I know only with jobs created with previous HBS-versions that was sucessfully converted or when you use an older Qnap with an older HBS version as that is said to not support QuDedup.

One job converted okay for me (versioned backup to locally attached USB-disk) and the other job (versioned backup to other Qnap) just stalled.
QuDedup is a great idea, but should be OPTIONAL.
Yes! That's what I've been saying as well since the first day I started using HBS3.

Why is QuDedup a good idea, unless you are short of space on the backup destination?

It isn't but that's like asking why is data storage a good thing if you have no data to store?

The two biggest issues with backups that many (most?) administrators have to deal with are (probably in this order):
  1. Space shortage on the backup destination.
  2. Backups are too slow.
QuDedup, at least on paper (I haven't really used it except for a few short tests), improves the situation with both issues.

I personally don't want to use QuDedup because of the disadvantages (proprietary format, loss of administrative freedom and control) but if I had either of the previously mentioned issues (that many other administrators have) I would be a QuDedup user.

Remember that a very large majority of other backup solutions on the market have the same advantages and disadvantages. Of course it is a great feature to add for those that need it. The only (but big) problem is that Qnap made QuDedup mandatory and removed the (almost) unique feature of non-proprietary backups that they have had for many years in all their previous backup solutions.

Hello
I have news about the Support Case i have open with QNAP Support:
"...Our team has verified the issue is fixed with Hybrid Backup Sync version 3.0.191104 and later version.
Please wait for new version release..."
This version still not release. Hope this new HBS3 version will solve the issue with versioning and backup :D

The risk is that they've ironed out more bugs but still don't allow non-QuDedup backups. I won't get my hope up until I see a specific promise of a change or a positive release note.

Hello Everyone. I have a question, Will HBS 3 defrag an external USB drive if left plugged in after sync jobs?

I doubt it. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere and most Backup software don't do this. It is more of an OS activity.

I would have said exactly the same.

In addition to that a backup is mostly large sequential writes so it won't become as fragmented or suffer from the consequences of it nearly as much as an OS disk. If one is worried about fragmentation it can be done by clearing the disk and do the backup from scratch once in a while, like every 12-24 months.
