Backup to TR-004? Configuration questions.

Post by Dadrepus »

I have a TVS-951X with 4-8tb drives in raid 5. Working fine but want backup protection and also maximum storage back to the 951. Bought Tr-004 as a backup with 4-8TB drives coming. How do I configure the backup and reconfigure the TVS to give me maximum storage back to the TVS? My thoughts are both to be configured raid 0, backup first then back-up the NAS and then reconfigure the NAS. And do a restore onto the NAS when done. If so, do I use the switched provided (hardware raid) on the DAS or use the software provided with the NAS to create the raid 0 on the DAS? The NAS is primarily a Plex server but may add house surveillance eventually(will add a separate drive.

Keep the 951x the way it is

Setup the Tr004 in external storage mode so it can be easily detached to a computer or new NAS in case of disaster (I wouldnt use RAID0 even for a backup .. but that is your call)

Use the TR004 as backup location for HBS3

This gives me no more space on the NAS than I currently have. I am a noobie so what is HBS3?

is you plan to use the TR as a Backup or to have more space .. ? title says backup

HBS3 = Hybrid Backup Station 3 (QNAPS internal backups program)

Oh, got it now. Yep, I have seen that utility. I had planned on using it to start the backup. Just didn't equate the initials with the program. So, I don't see the value of keeping the raid 5 if I have a complete backup solution in place. Care to elaborate?

raid5 is not a backup .. it just keeps your nas running on single drive failure

if you run raid0, you have to redo the whole nas and restore from backups if one drive has an issue

pretty big hassle..no ?

I'm convinced. So, same setup for the backup? Raid 5 TR-004?

So, everything finally working as it should both machines Raid 5, taking a couple of days to get everything backed up, although. So, I got a message that ,in the future I should move HBS3 to my SSD for faster performance cause it is slowing down, presumably. I would like to do this but the manual does not tell me how. Anybody know? I would also like to run Plex from the SSD or another SSD. How would i do that? And finally should these additional questions be in a new post?

For Plex the system would need to be re setup (as the DB is on the system volume) For HBS3 you can move it via APP Center to an SSD Volume

I run Plex on my 951X on a HDD volume without issues (all clients are snappy when navigating).. not sure what you hope to gain

Don't know either, really. Mine is running just fine as well, although it does take a few extra seconds to load 4k but it plays just fine. I think I'll just ignore the Qnap advice since this should be the only time it should take so long.

4k normally is also a higher data stream (more pixels = more data) so the initial buffering to the player will take longer, only way around that would be to beef up the player (and the rest of your network) to 10GbE
