Correction - 100,693 files for 660Gb backup job.

How long have I waited when stuck at 5% (which occurs after 10m)? At least 12 hours
I have experimented with 2 external HDs, one formatted NTFS on the QNAP and the other Ext4 on the QNAP.

HBS 3 backup works on Ext4 formatted drive (roughly 2 hours to complete), but only if QuDedup is disabled. HBS 3 backup does not work at all on NTFS formatted drive, with or without NTFS. I would like to be able to use NTFS formatted drive for Windows interoperability and to enable QuDedup, which is supposed to speed up backup, but can do neither

That's different. Yes that will take a while.
I have experimented with 2 external HDs, one formatted NTFS on the QNAP and the other Ext4 on the QNAP.
Good so now you know better where the issues are when you contact Qnap support.

I run versioned backups to Ext4 with no QuDedup so that explain why I haven't experienced the same issues you and others have. Initial seeding is slow for me as well (I have even smaller files than you, 4.17 TB with 832,838 files) but then backups run smoothly.
I would like to be able to use NTFS formatted drive for Windows interoperability...
Of course, they need to fix that. And as Toxic17 said, only Qnap can fix things that doesn't work in HBS.
...and to enable QuDedup, which is supposed to speed up backup...
Yes that's what the marketing tell us and since marketing is always truthful, that must be the case.

Remember that with QuDedup your data will be in a Qnap-proprietary backup format. Without QuDedup your backups will be plain files in a file system directly readable by any other system. I prefer the latter.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

There are about 4K files
Okay that's not very much for a little less than 1 TB. Many small files are otherwise known to slow down backups considerably.
I am pretty much doing the same backs ups as I was doing with HBS2

So yes the file size is relevant but appears only to HBS3 .

Yet another firmware update AND HBS3 update and nothing changed.ll

Well that's not totally true as it now gets stuck on 61% and still takes 24+ hours to backup 6TB

Really Qnap WTF?

Anyone having any faster BUs

Been a couple of firmware updates but no new HBS 3 and my BU are still taking 24 hours for 6 TB

I, too, had the problem of jobs getting 'stuck' at 5% and even seeing percentage go up to circa 88% and then drop to 61%!
QNAP support had no answers so I experimented with the 'concurrent file processing limit' where default is 5.
Changed it to 1 and no longer had any problems!
Reported this to QNAP support but they could not explain why this was.

For everyone that look for this option, it's found under Rules, Options, Error handling rules but seem to only be available on jobs to cloud destinations and not where an external drive or NAS/server is the destination.

I am having the same problem. The percentage changes in my case and I have found the problem to occur when HBS hits open files on the server being backed up. It aborts when trying to copy open files. I've lost count how many tickets, and how many times I've contacted QNAP about HBS. I have multiple QNAP's located at several client businesses, I've come to the belieft that QNAP NAS is just a home hobby product. No device which so many defects in such obvious places should be considered a serious business product... it's a toy.

I prefer QNAP over Synology but only on looks. I have a couple of Synology devices deployed and haven't had a single problem while QNAP seems to require constant support.

Looking for a real, professional and reliable backup solution to replace HBS.
