Help, have I lost everything? Newbie here.

Post by AndyWeymouth »

Hi all.

I'm not new to owning my QNAP NAS, just new to issues. It's been great for the last 9 years or so.
I have the TS-410, 4 bay unit, but have only ever run 2 x 2TB Seagate drives in RAID 1.
It's just for photos and music back up really, nothing heavy at all.

So, the other day, I thought I would log on and just have a look at the apps etc, to see about PLEX, and how I could maybe use it.
I saw there was an error on one of the drives, (Can't remember which one though now).
It said something about rebuilding (?) the drive, but I didn't do it.

At this point, I went on Amazon and bought two new drives.

I remember there being an option to do a rebuild (or something like that) where it "Wouldn't lose any data", or
another option where it would "Delete all data". I did the first one, rebooted, but it wouldn't boot up.
It just had a red flashing status light. I thought it would be best to switch off and wait for the new drives to arrive.

They arrived, I put them both in, booted up, and managed to set everything up to RAID 1 again, so I know the new drives and NAS are ok.

The problem is, It won't boot up with either, or both, of the original drives. I just get a red flashing light.

So, is there anything I can do, as my technical knowledge on this is very little. I don't want to risk doing any more damage
and risk losing everything I have, if I haven't lost it all already.

Many thanks

Andy

Plex will not work on your NAS, hasn't for a while (4-5 years)

A RAID is not a replacement for a backup .. you learned the hard way

At least you are in luck that your decade old NAS uses plain ext as filesystem, so connect a drive to a linux PC or ext reader in windows and you data should be on the largest partition (md0)

Next time have backups at all times

Ahhh, thank you for the speedy reply. :-)

I will try what you said. Any suggestions on a user friendly XET reader?

I'm guessing I can connect one of the drives with a SATA to USB cable? (I think a friend has one I could borrow).

No idea what readers are out there, never used one (I would use a linux live boot)

Just make sure you don't download dubious programs that infect your PC with malware or adware... if you do not have an adblocker basically 50% of "ad suggested" content for some searches is crapware

Update.....

Thank you to those who helped me out.

I have managed to recover all of my photos, videos and some other bits, but not my music.

For some reason, the drive started clicking and that was the end of that.

I lost a lot, but thanks to you guys, I saved some precious memories.

Many thanks.
