Old hdd swap

Post by QRocks »

Hello,
something was wrong with an update, so I decided to change the entire hdd,
installing again all.
Now a question what could happen if I try to remove the hdd and replace with the old one.
(the idea is to recover some files of the app used before that I missed to get with the last backup).
Is it correct assuming that the OS (qts) is on some memory not on the HDD itself?

(No raid was involved, just to be clear : the hd was and now the new one works as a static volume)

Second question:
after recovering the data,
with the old disk I would try to use it as an internal NTFS backup unit in the qnap second slot.
Is it possible :
first hd for QTS and
the second hd ready to be picked and readable from any win pc ?
(the 253be supports a hot plug even in this case? anyway I could perform a shutdown before remove the second hdd)

Thank you!

- The OS is on the disk
- Always have external backups..even more so with single disks..what was the plan here?
- Internal drives cannot be NTFS they get formatted for NAS use

- if you restore the os to working conditiins, you might be able to read the old disk from an internal slot via hotplug..external reading/recovery is not that easy

Thank you for your reply,
the qnap anyway can boot also without a hdd, so at last a part of OS/firmware is somewhere.

So swapping the old hdd (with an old os) is a fully safe?
( Could I later switch again the new hdd with no issue at all ? ( turning off every time the nas))

(I would get/export some small files from Notestation... from the old config)
