Lot of UDP requests from Download Station

Post by ohardy »

Hello,

Anybody can tell me why Download station do so many UDP requests to so many different IP addresses (no downloads running etc).

If I stop Download station service, UDP requests stop.

Can't put tcpdump here because the forum prevents me with: "Forbidden. Contains contacts."

Thanks :)

I would serious consider looking into a replacement for Download Station. Something more secure, and perhaps even in a VM.

I hope you have UPnP disable on your router *and* NAS and are not forwarding ports.

A VM is how I run my torrenting (might not be available for OP's unknown NAS)

VM with torrent client and an Annonymizer VPN connection (+ killswitch) for the VM (based on my router). More elaborate setups could also leverage automation (with the likes of what sherpa offers)

I made a lot of changes to my network and I had a network problem with the nas.

When I did a tcpdump to identify the problem, I found a lot of UDP connections. I identified Download station as the culprit even though I don't use this tool on the QNAP.

Now it is disabled, so no more problem but I find it very strange that there are so many requests from this tool.

As mentioned before, probably DHT traffic from the torrent client
