Thanks for the detailed instructions, Razormoon. I think I followed them to the letter but my TS-651 still won't connect. It says "connecting" but never makes it. The log is:

Start OpenVPN connection.
Wed Oct 12 13:30:08 2016 OpenVPN 2.3.6 i686-pc-linux-gnu [SSL (OpenSSL)] [LZO] [EPOLL] [MH] [IPv6] built on Sep 1 2016
Wed Oct 12 13:30:08 2016 library versions: OpenSSL 1.0.1t 3 May 2016, LZO 2.05
Wed Oct 12 13:30:08 2016 NOTE: the current --script-security setting may allow this configuration to call user-defined scripts
Wed Oct 12 13:30:09 2016 UDPv4 link local: [undef]
Wed Oct 12 13:30:09 2016 UDPv4 link remote: [AF_INET]109.201.138.235:1198
Wed Oct 12 13:30:23 2016 event_wait : Interrupted system call (code=4)
Wed Oct 12 13:30:23 2016 SIGTERM[hard,] received, process exiting

and this repeats until I kill the request. I checked the edited Client 1 file carefully and it looks just as yours does (minus the blue bits, of course). Any ideas as to where I should be looking for the problem would be much appreciated.

Sprocket, sorry...haven't been on in a while. You may want to post the client file and maybe some screenshots of network settings. Also make sure that the correct ports are opened in router.
It looks like it's not even attempting to send username and password...which is where the next step should be in your log.

Indeed it works... as it is the same instruction I posted. However, you may want to get encryption turned on for safety and switch to an encrypted port (1194 is not encrypted) and maybe add some more servers for redundancy in case your nl.privateinternetaccess.com goes down. The ovpn you posted is not secure.

Simply put, this is just the info I've been looking for. Thanks to razormoon for putting the tutorial together!

I'm very new to this, but can work out what's needed I'm sure, though I've a couple of questions which should be simple to answer if someone can help.

1) If I set up the VPN on the QNAP and don't enable the tunnel access for any other PCs / consoles on my network, they will continue to connect directly via my router as per normal?
2) Is there any connection performance hit if I were to route another PC thru the NAS and the appropriate VPN tunnel?
3) Are you all using PIA? I checked put the site and the options and it seems pretty good value for what's on offer, but wasn't aware of any alternatives. Are you happy with the service provided?
4) Am I correct in thinking that I can totally forget about needing to deal with proxys if I go the VPN route for my private internet access?

Cheers, and many thanks for all the hard work that's gone into this so far!

Hi Peter - Seems that this reply actually crossed paths with me getting a PIA account yesterday, securing OpenVPN for my Win10 laptop and with the help of this thread (plus a little bit of another) sorting out the OpenVPN client on my NAS this morning.

I specifically avoided the PIA customer support team as I read somewhere that they don't support QNAP. I'll not completely disregard them in future based on your feedback :)

Thanks to all who contributed and continue to contribute!

Hi,

TS-253A with QTS 4.3.3

I am using PIA Socks5 proxy for Download Station since 3 weeks. At first, it worked like a charm. But since 2 days, downloads either don't start ("hanging") or they show "failed" immediately after initiating the download. I have tested disabling the PIA proxy, downloads work normal again. I then tried starting a download without PIA proxy, and enabling the PIA proxy at about 10% into the download. To my surprise, the download completes without issues. So it seems to be an issue with initiating downloads whilst PIA proxy is active. Once I get passed the initiating phase it works fine. Any ideas on how to solve this?

Thanks

I have been using DS socks5 proxy with NordVPN and it was working fine until latest QNAP firmware update, 4.3.3. Now, downloads hang at magnet link and when I tried disabling proxy until magnet was resolved and enabling proxy for the rest of the download, it worked.

I've been on to tech support with this, as I had the same problem, and the devs have confirmed this is a bug and looking to fix this in the next release.

We're just waiting on the new version of DL Station ver 5.0.82 - the test team are currently running test to validate it before launching it (hopefully imminently)

I'm still having this problem (of downloads not initiating when the socks5 PIA client is in use). QTS 4.3.3 with Download Station 5.0.69 on a 219p+. I suspect this may be the last QTS update for this NAS, so I may need to find some other option... :|
