Slow downloadspeeds on QVPN

Post by iwolke »

Hi guys,

I am using QVPN to create a VPN gateway on my QNAP TS-453A. After downloading the proper .ovpn file from the NordVPN site everything works.

So far so good, I'm sure this has been working for a while. I have a 200/200 fibre connection to the internet, and my downloadspeeds were always between 20 end 25 Mb (SABnzbd, also running on my Qnap). However, lately I'm only getting 6-8 Mb down when on VPN. As soon as I disconnect the VPN connection and restart the download, it immediately switches to 25 Mb again. I have a gut feeling this change coïncided with a firmware upgrade but I'm not sure which one. Since then I have been hoping that each new upgrade would solve the issue, but it hasn't.

I have already removed and re-installed QVPN, tried different VPN servers, created new profiles in QVPN. When I connect my PC to the same NordVPN server and download the same file via a locally installed SABnzbd on my PC I do get the max speed, also when I'm on VPN.

Any help is appreciated guys,

Ignasz

Slow downloadspeeds on QVPN

Also how do you know the slowdown isn’t on Nord’s side?? You are the client side of the equation.

VPNs will generally cause a performance hit in throughput vs. no vpn.

@Dolbyman --> The CPU load during transfer is between 50 - 60 %, so not that bad. Memory use 30-40%.

@Trexx --> Doing the same transfer from my PC using the same NordVPN server downbloading the same file seconds later gives me full download speed.

Same here... the download speed is terrible, no matter if I use PPTP, OpenVPN, L2TP or IPSec.

I cannot get above 8MB/s, while I can download via the same VPN from my PC (with OpenVPN client) with full speed (25MB/s)

i'd be lucky to get any of my downloads to connect.

i setup a NORDVPN connection within QVPN,
from the APPCENTER i set DOWNLOADSTATION to connect using the VPN Connection,
not using proxy or socks5,
set DOWNLOADSTATION to use ports 6990-6999 and set NAT Rules in my Router to suit (should i redirect those ports to the LAN IP of my QNAP, or the VPN Client IP?)

Hello friends..

+1 for this.
I am having exactly the same problem.

Connected VPN, I only get ~6-8 MBit/s
Without VPN I get ~15 MBit/s (which is max. of my ISP).

Is there any news to this topic? :-(

well you do know using a vpn would lower transfer speeds duo routing and encrypting right ? that speed seems fine to me compare to my speed witch is 1MB/s of the 20MB/s

I am experiencing the same problem. NordVPN connected directly to my own PC runs 300% faster than if I configure QNAP QVPN up with the same OVPN profile. Same gateway network of course, only difference is PC vs NAS in my network.

because nas dont use the vpn app/prgoram that is specific build for it, the nase use a own builded program probaly bad coded and this is what i thing cause this, im sure if the vpn's make a app for the nas it would work 10x beter than qvpn, i have alot problems with pia vpn on open vpn qvpn out of my 7.9MB/s upload it opnly uses like 1MB/s when i enable vpn on nas, if i use same file on pc it go like 5.2 - 5.7MB/s so its not the vpn that cause it is probaly qvpn in the nas

there must be something i do wrong, to get this speed, i dont know and witch i hopes fore more IT tech ppl to help out abit

____
edit

a friend of mine told me its duo the CPU's , its not about the CPU load but about the IPC and that cause it that using a vpn goes slower than it should , so he tells me

I'm having the same issue. Routing DownloadStation traffic through QVPN (using PIA OpenVPN) gives me a traffic limit of around 500 KB/s

its just qnaps hardware **, for me its the last time i bought a qnap nas, i paid alot cash for this device and i cant even use vpn normaly , what good is a nas with having a vpn program if it cant even handle a vpn , so good for this 1200bucks soho device , my next nas wil be a custom build one , not spending on a so called powerfull device if it cant even handle trafic well of a vpn

Just wanted to share my experience. Openvpn client on the PC is of course faster for me. But I still get on my TS-873 between 14-22MB/s and that is inside the Win10 virtual machine running on qnap. If I change my pc gateway from my router to NAS to be behind same VPN I get even more than that. I use PIA as my vpn service.
