[FAQ] How to Setup DDNS? [Example by DynDNS]

Post by QNAPJason »

DDNS makes NAS with dynamic IP reacheable over WAN with a fixed domain name.
For a detailed tutorial guide, please follow this link: http://qnap.com/pro_application.asp?ap_id=111

Below is the process to apply a free DDNS account from the DynDNS..
And you can use the User Name, Password, and host name to configure the DDNS feature on your QNAP NAS.

Step 1: Visit http://www.dyndns.org. Click Create Account

Step 2: Complete the form to create your free account.

Step 3: After you created, an confirmation mail will be sent to your e-mail address.

Step 4: You will receive it in your mail box and click the URL to confirm.

Step 5: Account Confirmed

Step 6: Log in the the DynDNS by using the Username & Password you registered.

Step 7: Logged In

Step 8: Enter Service> Dynamic DNS

Step 9: Click Get Started to create a host

Step 10: Follow the example, select a free host name for yourself.

Step 11: A new host is created.

Step 12: Log in to your QNAP NAS

Step 13: Go to Network Settings> DDNS Service

Step 14: Input: User Name, Password, and Host Name. Then Click Apply button.

After you finish all the process, you may check if it works. (If your PC and QNAP NAS are located behind the same NAT router)

Check your current WAN address:
http://www.ip-lookup.net/
In most of the cases, it is useful for you to know your public IP address when you are behind a NAT router.

Use ping command to check your registered address of dynamic DNS:
Start menu --> Run --> cmd
ping xxx.dyndns.org

If you have set up the DDNS on QNAP NAS correctly, you will see the DDNS service provider feedback the same IP with your WAN IP address.

Please also note that, if you use a router, then you must forward the correct ports from your router to the NAS IP address. It is usually called "Port forwarding" or "Virtual Servers" on most routers.
