Multimedia Console no longer creates thumbnails for video files

Post by ppan »

Hello all,

I'm running out of ideas. Since a few months, generating thumbnails of video files does not work completely. Regenerating thumbnails also starts, but eventually none are generated. The counter remains low while the content continues to be scanned/searched. It's not the file format, I've already checked and tested everything. I already deleted and reinstalled the Multimedia Console (MMC).
I use the MMC only for content management and DLNA streaming of my home videos on the TV. Apps like Photo,-Video,- or Musicstation I don't use.
This is my hardware: NAS - TS-128A - firmware version 5.0.0.1870 build 20211201; PC - W10 Pro x64 21H1 patched through. Performed firmware update from 4.x.x to 5.x.x and updated the MMC to 1.6.0. Without success.
Have already browsed through every conceivable post, but found nothing of the same on this.

I just noticed that the thumbnail generation works fine for images/photos. Only with videos not. I am sure that all these videos had thumbnails before. This can't be a codec license thing, which was taken away from a certain version for legal reasons.

Attached is the view of the MMC with the few thumbnails.

I am grateful for every tip, but please no suggestions for alternative multimedia tools.
Sincerely
Peter

I didn't use the DLNA in a long time, but started using it again few weeks ago and I can confirm I haven't seen thumbnails for videos either at all, and I also remember they worked long time ago

It seems I am not alone with this problem. Could it possibly be due to missing codecs. Does anyone know what is going on. Is there a basic problem with MMC and video codecs?

Multimedia Console as content management for DLNA streaming does not seem to be used by many.
I just opened a ticket at QNAP support.

Seems to me there is a winter hole or corona hole in the whole QNAP cloud. Hanging in the pipeline for 2 weeks and no one responds to my request. Neither here in the forum nor QNAP Support !?! :(

Most people here do not use QNAP apps..they are made crappy in functionality and security

Multimedia Console for instance is something most people here will deinstall upon setup.

So if you need answers, you will have to wait on your ticket

Multimedia Console no longer generates thumbnails for videos. I believe that it used to use ffmpeg but for some licensing reason it now passes various aspects of functionality to the CAYIN MediaSign Player.
If you want thumbnails (or transcoding) then you have to install the CAYIN MediaSign Player and activate it by applying at least the basic licence.
The basic licence was free from QNAP for a while - not sure if it is still free.

It is likely that Multimedia Console will begin the process of thumbnail generation by passing files for processing and waiting for a response.
If CAYIN is not installed then it will likely just timeout the processes.
There was an issue where if CAYIN is installed and you had 4K videos but you set the Multimedia Console to only generate small thumbnails, the thumbnail generation would fail and immediately get restarted resulting in constant processing loops for certain files.

I also had the suspicion at first and now a confirmation by the forum. Unfortunately, I am now trapped because the Cayin MediaSign Player is not offered in the APP Center for my model. What can I do in this case. This is all a crap.

[ Edit ]
Just now I got a tip from the german forum to try the Player with realtek Architektur and it works. So its a bit hope on this dark play to me.

With CAYIN MediaSign Player it works again. Sad that QNAP compels its customers like this and above all does not provide qualified support. Until today I have not heard anything from QNAP. Once a diagnostic log request at the very beginning (January 24th) and that was it.

Without the forums I would be lost. Thanks to all who helped me with my problem.

Topic can be closed with pleasure.

Thank you so much for this, I can confirm it works with CAYIN MediaSign Plyer. Also the basic license still seems to be free for QNAP
