Using QNAP TS453a or for that matter just about any QNAP NAS as a media player for high quality content will be a lesson in humility. The media players available the processing power and GPU are all woefully under powered. I have been messing with variations of Linux Station, HDStation, Kodi, VLC media player, Plex for nearly a year now. The main issue is getting Pass-through Audio (works well enough with Father Mande's versions of Kodi but not as it should). For High quality Audio DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD and Bluray 1080p and 4k movies it is just not worth using QNAP as a media player.
I have found there is a better choice. Use the QNAP as your storage solution and invest in a NVidia Shield TV. Connect the Shield directly to your 4k TV (or directly to your AVR if it has HDMI2.0) and then point it to your QNAP NAS where your movies are located. Let the Shield to all the work and you can have up to 4k HDR video and HDaudio.

Re: Streaming 4K MKV files via PLEX to LG TV
I have a ShieldTV and do like it, but more as a single box for all my media needs (Kodi, Netflix, Vudu, etc.) in 4k.
Right now they are on pre-Black Friday sale @BestBuy for $170 for the model with remote & game controller I believe through Saturday. Amazon was price matching, but from what I have heard they are out of stock now.

Re: Streaming 4K MKV files via PLEX to LG TV
I've also been playing around with PLEX on the TS-453A streaming to a LG-55C7V and my conclusion is: no way to play 4K videos with plex.
I find the following way to work without problems:
-standard qnap DLNA server (as Twonky is no longer supported)
-standard LG photo and video player
it plays all content I tried so far just fine without any interruptions, Sound like DTS is also no problem:
-Standard 4k with DTS in MKV
-Standard 4k in MP4
-HDR 4k in MP4
-Standard 4k in TS
-Dolby Vision 4k in TS
So far that works without any additional hardware.

TomTom

twonky is supported .. for 2016 models and earlier .. twonky is brought back for free in the current firmware .. for later models it can be downloaded from twonky and activated for 20 bucksTomTom wrote:

Re: Streaming 4K MKV files via PLEX to LG TV
I can confirm that Plex has issues to stream 4k movie.
DLNA from Qnap worked fine for the stream. (I used LAN port on my TV, via WIFI i wasnt be able to stream)
For Plex and 4k video you need plex-pass.

Re: Streaming 4K MKV files via PLEX to LG TV
Interesting thread..
Currently running Plex on both a Windows box and a QNAS, both will stream 4K stuff no problem to a Samsung 4K TV using the Samsung Plex app (- direct playing on LAN)
Can I assume from the comments above this simply won't work with the LG Plex app?
