I understood it as: QNAP need a upgrade which is (was at the time) not compatible with some 3rd party application (twonky, transmission, ...?). So, they simply drop support to these applications (to get a time to concentrate on their own upgrades). And after they (QNAP) solved what they need ... and tested by few months... they have enough time to spend on returning dropped application support.

QNAP upgraded 64bit stuff and Twonky media supports 64bit linux only since 8.4.1 ...

Since my QNAP TS-212 is NOT 64bit ... it run the same old twonky as several years before...

Yeah, qnap could communicate it better... but who knows ...

Did you upgrade to 4.3.3.0299 Build 20170901 yet?

I can confirm Twonky is on the TS-121 and TVS 463 firmwares.

TS-121 has Twonky Server 8.2.1 on it.

not trying the TVS-463 as this has my licensed version of Twonky on it.
TS-219P+ also has the 8.2.1 on it. FFMPEG now seems to be able to show a screen capture of the movie as well. That didn't work previously on my NAS.

I'm assuming that if someone has already installed a Twonky licence that this firmware wouldnt overwrite it, after just having bought a licence.

it will use the same port :9000 but the installation wont be overwritten as the install folders are different.

on my TVS-463 the built in Twonky is version 8.3-17 (x86) - my licenced version is 8.4.1 (x64) and my TS-121 is 8.2.1 (built in)

I'd rather pay $19.99/€19.99) and have a x64 bit application which is fully supported and include updates. when QNAP finished with Twonky they were on 8.3 afaik, so I'm not sure if this return to Twonky is just an old version or a full supported app.

Do you know if its possible to remove the built-in Twonky app after the firmware update?

I'm in the same position as you, having purchased the x64 8.4.1 version I'm reluctant to take a step backwards and would prefer to have it out of the way to make sure there's no chance of conflict

you cant really remove it (without removing system folders etc), just make sure it is disabled (unticked) and use your version of Twonky in the App Center.

This is QNAP's response from a ticket I opened. I purchased a licenced when it was removed from the previous firmware, but thought I'd share the response I got.

"Thank you for contacting QNAP.

Previously we did not have licence for Twonky after 2017, and hence it was removed from our system. This current version that is on firmware 4.3.3.0299 is an older version, and will not be updated, it will only be available for some NAS models and with Serial numbers that are prior to 2017, meaning the Serial number of the NAS that start with Q16.... will have access to this.

For NAS with Q17.. or later will not have access to Twonky still, as QNAP do not have licence for these units, hence user will still need to purchase and install their own licence if their NAS is post 2017.

Hope that clarifies the situation."

So there you have it, the twonky that has appeared is the older one and wont be updated. I'm happy with my paid version that will come with updates and support.

I have Twonky back on TS-212, TS-453A and TS-431 but not on my TS-410s - I assume that as they are going to be desupported then QNAP have not bothered with giving it back to those devices....
