Twonky not avilable after upgrate to 4.3.3

Post by djlevi »

I have just installed firmware 4.3.3 and Twonky server is not longer available. I checked as alternatives, media stream add-on and filemanager sending to recievers but srt subtitles are not shown in this case.
What alternatives do i have?
Thanks.

Buy a personal use license for Twonky and then follow these instructions:

You do have the option of rolling back to 4.2.x if Twonky is that important and there aren't any other streaming apps that will work for your needs.

you don't need linux station for twonky, just download the qpgk from the twonky website

To roll back, you would manually install the latest 4.2.x firmware. Now whether that will be 100% pain-free is a different issue. QNAP did notate in the 4.3.3 release notes that Twonky was no longer supported and recommended using embedded media streaming app.

As for Linux Station, it requires 4GB memory minimum which is likely why you can't install it due to the TS-x69Pro family only supports 3GB.

I saw this change coming somewhere mid 2016, that the license would disappear from standard QNAP firmware. Already back then was unable to find it in the app center.
Started experimenting back then and eventually I switched over completely to PLEX.

In the beginning I was not all that happy with PLEX, but been using it now for like 9 months and must honestly say (in my opinion now) it's a great media server and a lot more advanced than Twonky.
It takes some time getting used to PLEX and adapting your media library to really complement the software of PLEX, but when you bite through it, I at least would never want to go back.
Thing with PLEX is that the DLNA mediaserver part is not all that good (Which was the way I was using Twonky and twonky on that part is really good), but when you adapt all your devices to start using the PLEX apps than this changes.
I'm using the PLEX apps on my computers (Windows, MacOS), Televisions (Samsungs) and my IOS devices and this is working really great in my opinion.
External SRT subs (in my case) are shown without a problem and selectable in the plex app.
Good luck with finding your ideal solution.

Thanks for the comments.
Finally i rolled back to firmware 4.2
Alex wasn't working for me, srt subtitles were not available on my Samsung TV using this server.
I tried also install Twonky qpkg but my NAS didn't allowed me getting an error (I tried almost 7 different qpkg versions)
