Does "Shared Graphics Memory" affect Plex?

Post by brandon.arnold »

Can someone explain the "Shared Graphics Memory" setting in Control Panel > System > Hardware? Clicking the Help (?) button shows a description pertaining to video transcoding, which is helpful. However, I can't tell whether it's referring to memory devoted to the QNAP Media Station apps, or to all graphics-related computation.

One interpretation is that the graphics hardware uses the system RAM instead of dedicated memory. So the drop-down affects how much system RAM is dedicated to the kernel graphics libraries, which would mean it could affect Plex as well.

The other interpretation is that it affects only QNAP Media Station transcoding. Any ideas?

No... it has no effect on Plex as Transcoding is currently SW based only.

My understanding is it would only affect any items that leverage the HDMI/graphics output (HD Station/Linux Station/QXL output for VS) that are leveraging the AMD R7 output.

I think this explains a lot. Just booting back into Linux Station after increasing to 2GB, high-res video does look perfect. Before, I could def tell it was not able to handle it. Thanks

Hi,
how much is the maximum shared memory you can set?

I have 8GB and I see 2GB, if I upgrade to 16GB can I set 4GB of shared memory?

Thanks!

Max amount is 2GB. Even with 32GB, it doesn't change.
