(LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS) Plex Server on NAS or PC?

Post by Tenyrsgone27 »

Hello,

I am new to the NAS world and am looking for suggestions please. I have a QNAP TS-253A 2-Bay NAS PRO Grade w/10TB WD RED PRO

I use Plex Server as my media server to stream my media to my family, I just built a new HTPC specifically to be able to handle multiple transcoding 1080p streams at 1 time. I'm using an ASUS AC3100 Dual Band Gigabit Router and have Plex Sever installed on my new HTPC and have it pointing to my NAS on my network. I've done a little testing outside of my home network and there seem to be no issues with the streaming or buffering on a device that has little resources to be able to transcode, but would running Plex Sever off the NAS directly be a better way to stream my media? I am assuming because my HTPC specs are better than the NAS it would be best to keep it the way I have?

Intel Core i7 6850K (6 x 4.0GHz CPU - 15MB Cache) 12 Core
Asus X99-STRIX-Gaming motherboard
Liquid Cooling
700W - Power Supply w/ Active PFC
Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 32GB 3000MHz
Nvidia GeForce GTX EVGA 1050 TI 4GB
Samsung 960 Evo 250GB

Thank you!

Try it. What do have to lose? Current PLEX QPKGS can be found on the PLEX site.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Now if you were looking to upgrade your NAS, then there are definitely some higher-end boxes that can handle both NAS & Plex Server duties but it didn't sounds like that was the path you were taking.
