QNAP HS-453DX & 4K HDR playback possible?
Hi everyone!
I just got a silent HS-453DX with 8GB ram and 2 SSD drives in raid.
Everything is working great so far... except for the media player side of things.
I installed Kodi 18, which seems to run just fine, but my 4k HDR movies only play in SDR (no HDR active).
Plex media player didn't perform well at all.
Since this NAS has an HDMI 2.0 output, I assumed that it would play 4K HDR videos just fine.
Is there any way to do so?
I also installed the app MyKodi 17.6 but it doesn't load at all.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks,
Raúl

kodi and hdr doesnt work yet ..at least not out of the box..you need to use a different video renderer .. e.g. madvr .. and thats on windows
use a different player for hdr ..doubt that qnap will add an official hdr capable player anytime soon
I use plex and dlna to play hdr(both on my tv) just fine

Re: QNAP HS-453DX & 4K HDR playback possible?
Thanks for the input.
I actually have an Nvidia Shield TV for streaming purposes. However, with big 4K rips, playback sometimes is not fluid with frequent buffering.
That's why I thought of using the NAS as a direct media player plugged directly in my system.
Since this model is advertised as a multimedia NAS with HDMI 2.0 output, it would be nice to actually be able to use it to the fullest.
Here's hoping that QNAP will update the media player apps to allow for 4K HDR files to be played directly...

I didn't have issues when I had my nvidia shield connected through ethernet to my router. Now, I can't connect it like that, just wifi.
Which network protocol do you use in your qnap to stream movies? I have enabled upnp and smb.
I wonder which one would be better for streaming big files...

Re: QNAP HS-453DX & 4K HDR playback possible?
what exactly do you not understand ?
for dlna you can use the builtin qnap dlna server or a 3rd party one (e.g. twonky) and then a dlna client of your choice (the tv / kodi/ etc)
for plex you use the plex qpkg for you qnap and the plex program on your tv/android box/apple tv/ etc
if you use kodi as a player, you can use lots of different protocols to stream (dlna, smb, plex, etc)

Hi,
I don't remember the version exactly. After seeing that the NAS wouldn't play HDR files, I just unplugged it from the TV and put it back in my office room.
I am using my Nvidia Shield TV again. But when I tried it, 4k files played fine, yes.

Kodi 18 seems to make some hdr emulation. Eventhough HDR logo won't lit on TV , image won't look washed out as on my PC playing through media player classic. Minimal image degradation.

Re: QNAP HS-453DX & 4K HDR playback possible?
hard to say .. you could try a speedtest with a builtin browservasilas432 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 30, 2019 12:09 am But then what speed can those smart TVs accept via wi fi?
buying a 4port+ switch where you would connect the NAS and a (e.g.) nvidia shield or other fast HDR capable streaming device to, will cost you 15 bucks
