Record a Video Web Stream?

Post by Gogetta »

Hi,

Is it possible to record a stream from a URL on a QNAP NAS?

I want to record Motorsport from a stream and save it as a .mkv or a similar format.

Could anybody tell me if this is currently possible? And If so, what software I need to do it?

I have a TS-453B so it should have enough grunt for the job.

Thanks very much to any replies!

depends on the stream

most official streams use drm ...so no chance of recording them ...without drm you could install a windows vm and look for streamripping software

Thanks for the reply dolbyman!

It's not an official stream so no DRM. I've just discovered that VLC can record. Downloaded VLC from the qnap club repository and now I can record the stream manually through HD Station with Remote Desktop. Works fine.

I know it's a long shot but is there any way I can schedule a recording? I know you can use crontab to schedule basic tasks but I wouldn't know where to start with scheduling a recording through VLC.

If it's basically impossible then I'll look into using a VM with Windows.

as said before, install a vm and use whatever tools you need (if you INSIST your nas needs to do the ripping)

no native tools for the nas available in the app center

Any update on this in the last two years?

I'm not talking about breaking any kind of protected streams, just recording basic radio from a URL on a schedule. There are windows apps for this, but the PC must be on and running. Seems like a natural for NAS, and supposedly Synology has this feature in their basic software, so it should be pretty straightforward for Qnap, which wants to make lots of multimedia software.
