Adding External HD to TS-453Be for plex streaming?

Hello, I think this is probably the best place to ask this. I have a 453Be and use it for plex streaming, video files only. I have a Western Digital My Passport of music that I tried plugging into the back via USB for plex to play music off of, but while the 453 showed the drive as active, and I could see it in File Station or whatever it's called to move files from it to the NAS is I wanted too, I could not point PLEX itself to external drive.

Is there a way to do this?
