Twonky on QTS4.3.3 - awkward auto-rollback from 8.5.1 to 8.2.1?

Post by graz848 »

Hello all,
sorry for opening a new thread on Twonky, but it just happened to me a quite strange thing and couldn't find an explanation on that.
I have a QNAP TS-112 with single drive, a pretty old NAS, but enough for my needs. I used to use Twonky, but after 4.3.3 update of QTS it was substituted by the QNAP Media Manager, which unfortunately does not seem to work at all with my Samsung Smart TV. So I searched some ways to come back to Twonky somehow (I would also be willing to pay 20 € for the license, if it works fine) and found the QPKG of Twonky 8.5.1 (ARM X19) here http://download.twonky.com/8.5.1/

I installed it fine, and it asked me to crate an account for a 30-day trial. I did. My plan was to verify if it works properly, and eventually pay the license.

After that, whe reopening after some hours the [NAS address]:9000 url to access Twonky configuration, I noticed that all the info about my account and the license (trial, etc) were disappeared, and the version of Twonky that you can read under Settings/State page, was 8.2.1.
In QNAP App Manager, by the way, the application still appears as "Twonky Server EU 8.5.1". I'm pretty sure I did not force any downgrade nor have ever downloaded the 8.2.1 version, it just seemed to have rollbacked himself to it.

Now, the media server is working perfect, but I don't know what to expect. Will this work indefinitely or will it cease after 30 days? And if it does, how can I renew my license since in this version all the references to account and license key seem gone? Anyone has a clue?
Thanks in advance

Hello!
I answer myself for anyone who might stumble upon this - I figured it out!
Actually it looks like in QTS 4.3.3.1432 (2020/10/06) there still IS an embedded version of Twonky, license-free, which is the 8.2.1.
I activated it by checking the box in Settings / DLNA Media Server, and by doing so I somehow "overwrote" the 8.5.1 I installed, which shares the same address/port.
By deactivating the check box in Settings, and interrupting and re-launching the Twonky 8.5.1, if I go to that address I actually see Twonky 8.5.1 with the license details (29 days of trials remaining...) and everything.

Now, what I did was to disable the 8.5.1 installed app and launch the 8.2.1 "embedded" in QNAP, which at this point I suppose is going to work "forever".
I will test it, if it works without problems, then I have a working DLNA and I don't need to purchase anything. Otherwise, we'll see...

It should. I still have a 212P (same series as yours) that came with Twonky enabled depending on the s/n of the unit.
TS-212P QTS: 4.3.3.1864 build 20211212
2 x Seagate ST3000VN000 (RAID 1)

I confirm , getting a empty TS-219 for almost nothing and noticed that the last firmware for this model is QTS 4.3.3.1432 and comes with Twonky 8.2.1
Unfortunately there will be no other future version. after. 3.3.4 will be the last for this model
the processor seems to be at the maximum of its capacities, do not ask for more :-)

from Qnap.com

QTS 4.3.3.1432 build 20201006
[Compatibility]

[Important Notes]
- For the status of QTS updates and maintenance for your NAS model, visit https://www.qnap.com/en/product/eol.php
[Fixed Issues]
- Fixed an elevation of privilege vulnerability in Samba that could cause unauthenticated domain takeover (CVE-2020-1472).
