Let me get this straight - we did all that just to get the list into iTunes?
I'm asking this because I had done this via a different way already

I have a lots of album to share with itunes server (about 500).
I could share all of them without any problem, but then I have created playlists for all albums (following your rules).
Since I have done that I can't see any of my shared songs.

When I reduce the number of playlists, I can sometime access to my shared songs, but it can stop suddenly and iTunes don't display all the playlist.

Is there any limitation with number of playlist allowed ?

One thing I have noticed, is that it seems to be case sensitive.

If the file structure looks like this:
\\qnap\Qmultimedia\Test\Dancing Queen.mp3

Then this will work:
Test/Dancing Queen.mp3

And this will NOT work:
test/Dancing Queen.mp3

Unix based Os'es are case sensitive

The SHARED link doesn't show up in my iTunes. Is there some setting that you have to change in it? (I'm running v8.1). I've enabled the iTunes server on my 509 and copied all my music.

my iTunes share wasn´t working since a long time. Now while upgrading my system to 3.1 I took the time to really find out whats going wrong.

I started to copy my music 1:1 to the drive and waited for the moment when iTunes stopped displaying the share.

I had a lot of .m3u in the "wrong" format but to my surprise iTunes worked with them without any problem.

Then I found out which folder kills the network share in iTunes immediately.

The folder contained music with .mpc files.

It seems that iTunes does´nt like it at all.

I´m happy to find out whats wrong. Forget about the .m3u format.

Maybe that helps somebody of you.

Edit: It´s the same with .ogg files

Same for .m4a files

no prob whatsoever with playlists

make sure itunes preferences - sharing - look for shared libraries is ticked

I am also having trouble with seeing itunes playlist on the shared NAS.

Using latest firmware 3.1.0 on TS-219P and have created a very simple playlist.m3u in same folder as the music
Qmultimedia \MyMusic\iTunes Music\James\playlist.m3u

Obviously the music files are named exactly the same.

Playlist is not showing on the shared NAS in itunes. Music is playing ok though.

For the m3u file I have tried different UTF encoding. Also tried saving in Unix or Windows format.

Any ideas?


I think for futre it would be very nice to simply export the itunes playlists in txt or xml format and put the file at the top of itunes folder under Qmultimedia.

now I'm playing a lot of time with the playlists It's not easy to set them up. This thread here helped ma a lot, but now I have a problem with German Umlauts like "ä, ü, ö,..."

I have a SS-439 Pro. With the latest firmware. I create a m3u file like this one:

It works fine but the last two songs do not appear. I'm sure the problem is the "ü" character.
How do I have to write this to work fine ?


A second question is, does somebody now a great playlist creator ? I mean something that shows me my folders like a tree and so I should be able to makr the whole folder or ohny a few songs inside. Editing such a playlist should also work like that. After saving the playlist it should work with an my QNAP.

Any ideas ?

to be fair this seems to be a lot of work just to get itunes to work......on my side it doesnt; as the time machine. so far nothing really works good on my NAS TS 412. itunes not working, time machine not working.......bad thing; im no admin, i dont want to get a freaking notepad out and write everything myself......so far i cannot give the ts 412 a positive review on amazon (bought it there)

Guys try running plex server on your NAS and then use IPAD/Iphone or even Windows device with Plex app to play and they airstream to Apple tv, got 21000 tracks all locked and loaded on my NAS and plays off fine including album data etc.

It's a bit clunky but works for video files tv shows and most importantly .avi files to save you converting everything.

watching breaking bad now of my NAS at 720P via Ipad right now

app does cost 5 bucks but well worth the hassle as they have a QPKG

According to the RFC for streaming mediahttps://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-panto ... reaming-13
which includes a chapter on the playlist files...

Playlist files whose names end in .m3u8 and/or have the HTTP Content-Type "application/vnd.apple.mpegurl" are encoded in UTF-8 [RFC3629].
Files whose names end with .m3u and/or have the HTTP Content-Type [RFC2616] "audio/mpegurl" are encoded in US-ASCII [US_ASCII].

...which implies that you can't use non-US-ASCII characters in a .m3u file.
