m4a files on QMusic App

I've been using Music Station for about a year, having successfully migrated my extensive collection to our new NAS.
The QMusic App on my iPad has never been able to play m4a files from the Download folder. That was fine as I saw that online before installing the app, but it would be nice to do so.
The same app could always play m4a files when streaming from the NAS itself up until a few weeks ago. Now the feature no longer works.
The same is true when using Music Station.
Does anyone have a cause and a solution for me or a recommended app alternative?
