TS-453Be Intel Celeron Apollo Lake J3455 Quad-core CPU F-1 Stepping

Post by gomactrading » Wed May 20, 2020 10:32 am

Does anyone know if QNAP TS-453Be-2G-US Intel Celeron Apollo Lake J3455 Quad-core CPU comes with F-1 Stepping or the old faulty/defective B-1 Stepping which was recalled by Intel last year? There is no relevant info on QNAP site regarding this matter which is so important when deciding to buying or not buying the NAS. Thank you.

Intel is urging its customers (QNAP!!!!!!!) to transition existing affected products to the new stepping as soon as possible (not later than February 20, 2020). To simplify the transition and avoid confusion between the new and old stepping, Intel adding the "E" suffix to the processor names. As a result, the processors with the F1 stepping will be marketed as Celeron J3455E, J3355E, N3350E and Pentium N4200E. If you're shopping and come by one of affected Apollo Lake SKUs, make sure the processor have the "E" suffix.

Did that but they have no access to hardware. They are working from home due to Covid19. It is highly likely that they are using the B-1 Stepping with the firmware update which Intel said will fix the issue. Never trusted Intel on fixing hardware failure with software patches. Lipstick on a pig! Wanted to buy TS-453Be since my TS-451A just died as soon as it was out of warranty and QNAP wanted too much money to fix it.

Response from QNAP:

Our PM went a step ahead to check with our HQ. They replied this is confidential information, unfortunately I can not confirm your request. Below some info related to this inquiry, basically we do not have any issue with either CPU version, QNAP will meet the performance.

legal mumbo jumbo decoded:
"we didn't update the stepping, but won't tell you to not have all sorts of trouble with people complaining and PR or legal backlash. Just cross your fingers that your CPU doesn't go up in smoke"

Maybe someone who has one of the recent TS-453Be models can check?

Code: Select all

grep 'model name\|step' /proc/cpuinfo

Hello,

my output looks like this:

[~] # grep 'model name\|step' /proc/cpuinfo
model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU J3455 @ 1.50GHz
stepping : 9
model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU J3455 @ 1.50GHz
stepping : 9
model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU J3455 @ 1.50GHz
stepping : 9
model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU J3455 @ 1.50GHz
stepping : 9

I my NAS affected?

Ah, I've only just found that it's not possible to convert a stepping number back into a stepping code. :(

But, based on your 'cpuinfo', I'm inclined to say "yes, your CPU is affected" as the CPU model with the updated stepping code was changed to J3455E. So, I think you have one of the older model CPUs.

Is there anything I can do?

I already knew about the problem before I bought my NAS. So I asked QNAP before via support ticket.

They told me, that the do not know any problem with this processor.

That was the reply from QNAP to my german ticket:
„vielen Dank für Ihre Nachricht. Die CPUs halten genau solang wie in allen anderen Geräten. Manchmal gehen Sie schnell kaputt, machmal halten
Sie ewig. Ich habe zuhause acuh eine NAS mit dem Prozessortyp, die NAS ist aus dem Baujahr 2014 und funktioniert immer noch einwandfrei,“

Best regards,

Keep using it until it breaks. Then replace it. :DD

Hi!

My TS-453Be has switched itself off in Dezember last year and I got a new one from QNAP in February. But it seems this one has the same problem:
model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU J3455 @ 1.50GHz
stepping : 9

That's really bad, because the old one has warranty until June 2020 and so has the newly changed one.

Isn‘t it possible to avoid the problem with a BIOS update?
