TS-653D RAM Specifications

Post by badgenes »

Does anyone know the specs on the RAM this NAS requires? I purchased the 4GB variant and already regret not getting the 8GB version. I am unable to locate much besides people discussing RAM upgrade that the CPU will never use and as such a waste of funds. Most seem to be using dual ranked SODIMMS but I found reference to single ranked SODIMMs. If anyone can say for certain what 4GB SODIMMS this device will take I am trying to get mine upgraded ASAP. Much appreciated.

if you go to the product page it states MAX RAM.

from what i've seen, nascompares tested 16gb ram working on the x53D, but 32gb probly didn't work.

Then later someone on youtube claims their intel engineer friend, said something about max limit is a cpu limitation. so even if you put 16gb, it doesn't quite use above what the max limit was set. i'm not a tech expert on this, i just relayed what was posted by others.

but 4-8gb should be fine for most people. though once quts hero comes out, more ram is always better. actually, even VM usage is hungry for ram all the time,

I am curious on the same too. The place where all this additional memory would be useful is in the virtualization station. Though Nascompares in his channel shows a successful upgrade to 32GB using 16GB x 2 sticks of RAM, but if you read the comments there, many people have tried and failed to upgrade even to 16GB. What about RAM speed (2400, 2666 or higher) what is supported

If you go to QNAPs page and go down to optional accessories , it will tell you some specs.

you are correct about more ram tends to be useful for vm usage where you split the ram between the VM and the NAS, so you need more ram.

As for which ram is supported... officially the qnap store will say which ram they sell will work.

But unofficially, you have users using their own ram. I personally go to the crucial website, they have the qnap nas listed there and they claim they verified which of their ram works for the nas models they tested. so i bought those, and they have worked so far no issues.

however, if you opt to get ram elsewhere, you may run into helpdesk refusing to assist unless you use the original ram. so i suggest you DO NOT sell the original ram. Keep it in storage, then reinstall back into your system, if this issue was raised by them.

Thanks, but did you upgrade to greater than 8GB or stuck to that limit.

EDIT: I also checked the crucial site, they dont have the 453D listed in the NAS drop down

my ts-877 can do 16gb and more. so i upgraded that to 16gb.

the tbs-453dx i upgraded to 16gb and it boots up fine.

i checked kingston for you, but i didn't see for 453d either

you could try checking corsair website? :'

Corsair site seems to be down. An alternative corsair site for memory configurator - does not list NAS'.

For your upgrade of the 453D.. did you do 8GB x 2 or 16GB x 1 config?

no i did not bother to upgrade ram for it (for qnap i've only upgraded ram to 16gb for both a ts-877 and a tbs-453dx, before that i never felt the need to upgrade). mine is a ts-253D fyi :ashamed:

nascompares did the test if you are interested

and this is the comment by some rando user which i was referring to in regards to "what if you install ram beyond the max ram on the official spec page"
Rob Roberts-

While more memory is a plus, it's Intel that says the most ram the Celeron J4125 can utilize is 8GB. The bios and QOS recognize the ram on the bus because QOS is written to be extensible to a wide variety of motherboards, but just because the OS recognizes the ram doesn't mean the J4125 processor has the ability to utilize more than 8GB. Why would Intel say only 8GB if it could handle more? I was wondering the same thing and just got off the phone with a dear friend who worked at Intel for 10 years (design SOCs) and he verified it's a physical limitation of the processor itself.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgL4DBz ... ygh4AaABAg

as such, it may be better just upgrading to the max allowable for that model which is stated on the qnap spec page. yes you may see 16gb registered and the qnap boot up. but whether it will utilize all 16gb? maybe not based on what i read :' and like i said, i'm not an expert, but this is based on what others are saying on the matter.

I did not know this I always thought that 8GB was a QNAP limitation not an Intel one. Thanks for clearing that up. Then definitely does not make sense going with anything more than 8GB

Hello all,

Regarding compatible RAM memory for QNAP TS-653D, please allow me to share some information that I hope might be helpful:
  1. The Intel Celeron J4125 CPU specification allows for: maximum memory size 8 GB.
  2. The QNAP TS-653D NAS memory specification allows for: 2 x 4GB DDR4 SO-DIMM and requires identical modules.
  3. The QNAP RAM recommendation for the TS-653D specifies ADATA Part Number: AD4S2400J4G17-BHYA. Please visit the ADATA Product Detail Page for DDR4 2400 SO-DIMM for additional details.
  4. A visit to the ADATA DRAM Module P/N Decoder might help with cross-reference and identification of similarly compatible modules.

For quick reference, here is the QNAP TS-653D memory specification (shown at the bottom under “Optional Accessories > RAM”:
  • DDR type: DDR4(260PIN)
  • Capacity: 4GB
  • Spec: HYNIX 512M X 16
  • Manufacturer: ADATA
  • Frequency: DDR4-2400
  • Form(PIN): 260PIN
  • Manufacturer P/N: AD4S2400J4G17-BHYA
  • Power Supply: 1.2V
  • Dram Organization: 512M*64
  • Temperature: 0℃~85℃
  • Environmental Regulation: RoHS

Thanks this information was very helpful. I was trying to decide on which memory module to go for and i realised that the CPU limits max to 8GB and speed to 2400. So while initially i was thinking of going with crucial, i now think i will go with GSkill as that has lower CAS Latency compared to Crucial.

Hello,

You are very welcome; I am glad to be able to contribute an assist. Regarding the CAS Latency, CL 17-17-17 (sometimes abbreviated to only "CL17") is the value for the ADATA AD4S2400J4G17-BHYA (specified by QNAP).

For quick reference:
ADATA AD4S2400J4G17-BHYA -- the Part Number Decoded is:
  • AD = ADATA
  • 4 = DDR4
  • S = SO-DIMM
  • 2400 = Speed: 2,400 MHz
  • J = Component Configuration Code: 512x16
  • 4G = Capacity: 4 GB per Module
  • 17 = CAS Latency: CL17
  • -
  • BH = Package Code: Bulk + HS
  • YA = PCB Color Code

I would be wary of NAS compares, I followed their info for the TS-653D and bought 2X 8GB sticks of RAM

All worked well for a while then the NAS began to reboot when I was running and using some docker Minecraft servers

So I turned that off and all was well with the unit just doing file shares

Now the unit crashes when moving data from my PC

So had to revert to the original 4GB of Ram and see if that resolves it, also if there are wider issues Qnap support will see the none standard RAM and say that's the issue
