How do I configure my TS-832X to use both Gigabit Ethernet and 10GbE SFP+?

Post by C47man »

I have just configured my new TS-832X in RAID 10 with 8x 10TB WD Red drives. All has gone well! I did this using the ethernet cable included. I connected the QNAP from the #1 Ethernet port to my home router. I then managed everything from my PC, also located on that network. Now, I then added an SFP+>RJ45 transceiver and connected that via Cat6 directly into a 10GbE RJ45 port on my computer. Both the 1GbE and 10GbE ports are built into my motherboard and show up as separate devices in my network adapters.

I am able to access the shared folders from my QNAP from the 10GbE adapter, but only if I first disable my 1GbE adapter to force my computer to use it. I'd like for my computer to use the 1GbE port for internet and usual stuff, but to then use my 10GbE port when interacting with my TS-832X. How can I configure this? I had already tried assigning a higher priority to my 10GbE port by lowering the Metric to 1 and raising my 1GbE NIC to a metric of 30. That didn't help. I'm new to networking so I'm sure I'm doing something silly here, but I'm a bit at a loss.

put the 10GbE connection in a different subnet

then use that 10GbE subnet to mount your shares on the pc

assign a static IP address (IPv4) for your 10G NIC in your computer, and for your SFP+ 10G port in the QNAP. For example, make the computer 192.168.2.11 subnet 255.255.255.0, and make the QNAP SFP+ port 192.168.2.3, subnet 255.255.255.0. On your computer, open the RUN window and type in
\\192.168.2.3
and it will ask for your QNAP login info. Once it connects, right click on the QNAP volume, and select "Map Network Volume". That's it.

You used a SFP+>RJ45 transceiver to connect your TS-832X to RJ45 10Gbe. I am attempting something similar.

Question: What transceiver did you use? People have reported compatibility issues with various transceivers. I'm looking for one that works. Thanks.

I would also like to know what transceiver did you use? I would like to connect TS-332X with QHora-301W.
