QNAP enclosures - anything special about the fans?

Post by glenintenn »

I have a QNAP TS-231P2.

The fan is making sounds as though it's not long for this world.

QNAP seems to sell one for USD40 here (pictured here)

I've found one on Amazon which is USD8.95 ( here ) . The rating for the fan seems to be about the same Fan Speed and Cubic Feet /Minute throughput.

1. is there something special about the QNAP fans that would require the exact spec they have in their store? (e.g. is the QNAP unit controlling the fan other than "off/on"? -- I notice things like fan speed being referenced in the admin utility. Is this something common to all of these cheap little fans or are there special electronics which integrate into QNAP fans?)

2. the one key difference is that QNAP-supplied fan is 0.15A and the Amazon one is 0.19A. Will the cheap fan work or will that difference cause issues?

Thoughts?

and the amperage difference? Any problems with that?

hopefully the connector isn't proprietary. There's not really a good picture of it in the Amazon-cheapy. although, I think the wires on the current connector just slide into the connector.

just a regular pwm 4pin fan ... current draw will be within given spec for internal cooling fans
